  • Transmission draining plug

    Hi Guys:
A few weeks back, i changed the transmission oil, and for my surprise part of the threads on the case are stripped.... I know who did, was the guy i took the car for a clutch change months ago( never again). You can say that 3/4 of the total threads are gone, so i clean it up, put some Teflon tape and a new soft Aluminum washer on the bolt and just barely got it there. It is not leaking but i dont have internal peace knowing that needs to be fixed.
Any Ideas on how to fix it?

    thks

Now I'm not saying this one is the correct one. I am saying this type of plug I have used as an engine oil drain plug before. This particular one looks long but I am sure they make different types. IT IS A VERY GENERIC fix but in an emergency it may buy you time to get a proper fix done. On my beater Honda's that I wasn't scared about I have had good luck with them. Honda oil pans are known for doing this upon removal of the drain plug. Though I would never use it on a pride-and-joy.

helicoil would be the "right" way to do it.

I would get a bolt 1 size bigger and rethread the whole 1 size bigger.

Both of these methods are the "correct" way. The easiest is drilling and tapping it slightly bigger. Don't go bigger than 2 mm bigger though.

Next you will probably ask .... " What size is the stock thread?" I don't know atm, but I have one I can measure and tell you what that is, and what size you should use to fix it.

How about junkyards? You could get another pan.

Great idea but I think we're discussing a standard transmission so there would be no pan.

I just checked the mtx drain plug in my old 4 spd. Looks to be 14x2 mm thread.
