  • Intermittent no spark condition at the coil

I have a 1993 ford Festiva which intermittently dies out and there is no spark at the ignition coil when it will not run. I have read some other forums and it seems most think it is the distributor. Any feedback on any similar situations would help greatly. We are ordering a distributor as I speak and its around $200 which is nothing to sneeze at. Thanks.

There is a module in the distributor that controls the spark. I believe it's called the ICM. (Ignition control module). It may be bad and cheaper than the complete disty.

Thanks I will check it out. This car has been driving me crazy... It runs and everything is fine then dies out and will not have spark. Ive got power to the coil but the coil wont spark. then maybe the next day or even 30 sec later it will start and ive got spark again...

Sounds like a short of some sort if its not the ICM, I would check the wiring if its not the ICM.

The ICM will supply a signal to the coil to fire ? Is that correct ? If so I am getting a pulse to the coil and 12 volts to the wire beside it. Even though I still have no spark at the coil.

If the ground (-) is pulsing, have you checked the coil? You may have a bad coil. It may have a wire that's opening when it gets hot and making contact when it cools off. That could cause your intermittent problem. I'm referring to the wires inside the coil opening when hot.

Well I checked the winding /coil resistance and it was 1.0 ohm , not sure if that is good or bad ... What ways do you know of testing the coil? Also do you know how to test the ICM?

The ignition control module can be tested at some auto parts stores. Check out distester.com who makes the testers. I had problems with their techie not knowing how to tell the parts manager how to hook up the tester but got it figured out. With the module held like a "U" the connections are, left to right, black (in screw hole), nothing (single spade connector, vertical), yellow, green (two spade connectors, horizontal), red, brown (two spade connectors, vertical).

Before spending money on a distributor I'd go for the coil. I think it more likely to be the problem unless failry new. Mine was original.

                Good luck.
