  • Fires and then dies

    1992 auto.
Newly installed Aspire head. The car starts and then dies as quickly as it starts. Got it to start and ran it long enough to fill the coolant. While is was running, it was bogging under quick throttle. Finally sputtered and died. Again with the quick starts and dying. Finally started again, drove it into the garage and parked it.
Not sure where to go from here. Any help would be most appreciated.

Make sure the VAF is connected. Make sure the intake hose is tight and has no holes in it.

I went right to it. I got it to start and run and then I just touched the VAF plug and it died. Cleaned up the terminals and it's much better now. With some force in just the right direction, it will still die, but at least I know where to look now. Thanks guys!!! I am proud to own a festiva!!!

Just in case you can't figure out what's wrong with the VAF, you can always substitute a Revolution fuel pump relay. It monitors the presence of a tach signal instead. Same idea, different path.

Is the relay a pretty simple install?

I managed to get it right the first time.
I mounted it exactly where the Festiva fuel pump relay used to be.
You will need to splice into the tach wire.
You can use the other wires from the existing fuel pump relay.

Try to clean up your existing VAF connections first, to save money.

I haven't had any problems in the last few days. It will still die if I torque on the VAF plug pretty good. I think I will run it for a while to see how it will do.
