20w50: too much?

A mechanic once told me to run the heaviest oil I could get my hands on, in a high milage engine. Around here 20/50 is commonly available. At the time, we were talking about a 4.0L Toyota with about 250k. Does that advice hold true with a 1.3L b3 (unknown milage)? Chassis has 355k, was told its not the original engine. I don't want to overburden the oil circulation system/seals. Already has a small leak. I think at the real seal.

I usually run either 10W-30 or 5W-20 in mine. It depends on who changes it, I use 10W-30, the local oil change place uses 5W-20. The new motor We're building will run 5W-20 Synthetic after break-in. Opinions vary depending on who answers.

It really depends on the average temperature where you live. Since you didn't put your location in your profile, nobody can respond. Let's just say that Alaska is different than Florida. The same applies for wheel bearing grease.

BTW I'm in Littleton, CO. Sometimes Alaska in the morning (30F-40F) and Florida (80+F) in the afternoon.

I only run 20w50 when I have a bad oil seal leak, and want to slow the leak down, like on road trips for example.

True story: used to have an F100 with the 302. It had a rear main seal leak, which I greatly slowed down with an additive specifically designed to fix that. Then I added Slick 50 to my oil on the next oil change, and the leak was as bad as ever, if not worse!

I run Castrol GTX high milage 10W-30 all year round in my aspire, in my Accent, and in both my festivas (except in Old Yellow, my 5speed 91 festiva it runs regular Castrol GTX has less than 75,000)

You know, I live in the tropics and here the 20w50 is used only on old cars, meaning like 1980 and bellow. We here have a lot of old Toyotas, Datsuns(Nissan), Mazdas, Subarus, very few chevys and fords, almost no chryslers/dodges and 20w50 is the favorite for those cars. But cars from 89 and above 10w40 or 5w50 its what its used. Again where i live is always between 20C-35C..

now here's my story..... I used to run 2QTS 85w140 gear oil and 2 QTS 20w50 in my "JUNKYARD BOX" B3, god I could kill mosquitos with that thing when I first got it! It was truly WELL PAST worn out and burnt up, but it made it another 19,000 miles (to make 320k miles total on the stock engine) until I found a suitable BP to swap in!!!

I was running rotella 15w40 and got valve tick on startup. Ran t6, ticking gone after 300kms.
