  • OLD...........

These cars, as much as we love them, are getting older and older, as have I . Deterioration from old age is a fact of life. I have 3 and one is still running. I am getting tired of fighting off the enevitable. I have had my fun fussing with them and would give them away

At least sell parts off them (the two non-runners), and sell the runner.

I'd love to get one of those florida cars up to michigan! Battling rust from all this salt is a nightmare.

I have more experience with old bicycles than old cars but am constantly finding old bikes in good condition, little wear, little rust. kept indoors and well maintained. Raleigh used to make bikes to last 100 years and I don't doubt some will. I don't doubt cars, also being machines, can do as well. I keep mine indoors, underspray each autumn with oil, and try to fix things when they first start exhibitng sysmptoms of needing work. I also drive like an old woman not to stress the car any more than necessary. I hope to keep my Festiva running for years to come. It requires extra time, but not much expense, in my experience.

This is the opposite reason I just sold the newest vehicle I've ever owned. I picked up a 2000 Impala a few weeks ago and just sold it today.

Sure it was a nice enough car. Heated leather seats, power everything, etc. Bought it basically for scrap price so I figured I wasn't getting hurt on the deal.

After tinkering with it a few days to fix some minor problems, it FINALLY occured to me how much more complex the newer vehicles are. Yea, it's old news for a lot of you, but I really have no desire at the present time to have a vehicle long term that the manufacturer deems 3 different fuse panels are needed.

So with that said, I'll keep my Festiva(s) for as long as I can. Simple to work on. Reasonably easy to get parts for. Fun to drive. And most importantly, one heck of a good site full of great support.

i'm not sure what the issue is here. even though it will never be in the same league, there are hundreds of much older cars passing through barrett-jacksons and other auctions for hundreds and sometimes millions of dollars that run and move and could pass any safety inspection. there is an annual vintage grand pricks here every year where very old, rare, and valuable cars compete in races. a car is basically metal. except for rust or fatigue, it should last longer than you with some care and maintenance. i've let go more cars just out of a desire for something different as i have because they cost too much to keep running.
