    Cause of the battery explosion...

    I finally got a used battery and a used radiator for Red after the battery explosion about 6 months ago.

    I hooked everything up and tried to start it. All it did was crank. The batteries charge got low so I hooked some jumper cables up to it and got a lot of sparks off the battery terminals. So that means I have a short somewhere!

    I looked all around in the engine compartment then I looked at the fuse box ..... Half the heater fuse was totally melted and disintegrated and it destroyed the part of the fuse box where the heater fuse was. I am also assuming the so called brain underneath the drivers seat is also fried!

    My questions are: *Could the fuse box be causing the short & caused the battery to explode?
    *Why would the heater fuse just disintegrate like that?
    *Would the brain be causing this whole mess?
    *I am assuming it will not start because of the fried fuse box or fried brain!?

    For S&G's I would pull the alternator and have it tested.

      The brain under the driver's seat is for the automatic seatbelts. It has it's own 30A fuse in the dash fuse box.
      I have no clue how the heater fuse could have just disintegrated. That's odd. Post pictures!

          In other words, just for the heck of it, check the alt.

            Engines need three things to run

            FUEL

            COMPRESSION

            SPARK

            Have you pulled a plug wire and watched it as it cranked?

            If it has spark you have another issue if it doesn't ya needs to figure out why and fix it.

              and check your alt .If it was overcharging the battery which may boil the acid and make hydrogen gas that will blowup with a spark. Had a truck do that long ago, It was the voltage regulator.

                Precisely. If it is putting out too many volts, it can also melt fuses...

                    Which reminds me. When my alt went bad and fried fuses, it also fried my ecu. I wouldn't get spark. So if yours tests bad, replace then test for spark.

                      Alt is good.

                      Now I'm stumped, I guess the battery itself was bad. After it exploded, the car was still running. A couple of days later tried to start the car without a battery, it started at first then it wouldn't start.
                      I have been trying to start it now and it will not start. It has a good battery and alt. I checked for spark and I am not getting any. So I guess I need to check the ECU?

                            The car was running at the time of explosion?


                            The fuse is melted.


                            Alternator checks out fine.


                            I have no idea why the battery would explode, but a fuse being melted like that is because something is drawing more power than the fuse can handle.

                            I would replace that fuse block and leave that fuse out. The battery can't force too much power through a fuse. Something has to be on the receiving end PULLING the power from the battery. I'm guessing you'll be looking for a new blower motor but that's just a guess. You'll have to get the car running and troubleshoot to see how many amps/volts are going through that circuit then find what is causing it.


                            On second thought, i bet the battery exploded when the fuse block melted and fused together some contacts that should never contact...

                            I might have a spare ecu for cheap if u need one.

                              LOL! Let me rephrase that. We were jumping it without a battery in the car.
