  • Is my festiva RUnning too hot

    Hello All,

After changing my cluster; it has become a bit difficult to tell if I'm Running hot. With my old cluster w/o a tach, my temp needle always ran and stayed at the mid way ppoint. With the new tach its seems a lot higher. I've changed thermostat, has new anti freeze; the water pump is relatively new, and the radiator is relatively new aswell. It does have a B8 swap; but from my understanding the festiva cooling system should be enough to cool the engine. Can anyone confirm if i'm running hot thanks.

    Your fine!

But if it bothers you send me that cluster and go back to your old one.
You feel better and I will too!

There has to be a resistor mod you could do to those clusters to "calibrate"them. The thermistor that is used to read the coolant temp probably works as a current limiting resistor to that circuit. All that temp gauge is is a simple electromagnetic needle, so you could actually calibrate the needle into the center I would assume. Like PU241 said. Send it to me and I'll figure it out for you in my car!

If someone ever had the cluster apart, they may have changed the position of the needle. I've seen that happen as well.

I have a few clusters and never had one run that close to hot

Mine doesn't run that hot and I'm in south FL. When did you change the thermostat and water pump ?

I changed the thermostat today and I'm getting the same results, I was using the festiva thermostat with protege housing, but today I changed it to a protege thermostat and festiva housing. With my previous setup my upper hose seemed a lil pinched so I thought that was an issue, but no same results. My fan is working only things left are radiator which is 5 months old, and my water pump 9 months oldwhich came off my B3. I'm thinking about running the car without a thermostat to check for flow. But at this point not sure what else to do. Might have to get a digital gauge to see actual reading.

I would simply measure the resistance and compare it to spec, before changing thermostats or purchasing digital gauges. You certainly have a lot more money than I do to throw at the problem.

Thanks for the input all, got it fixed, guess the temp sensor, the one on my head cylinder or the one on my thermostat housing, werent working and throwing the reading off. I replaced both, my gauge hasn't gone higher than half anymore.
