  • Loss of umph when hot

Well I was gonna just rename my last thread but I couldn't figure that out so here goes. I've figured out that Ive got a 1st gen B6 in my festy its an 86 Las far as I can tell from the other thread I'm running the stock B3 carb, and dizzy. It runs smooth when it's first started but as you go along it seems to fade. and hasnt been able to run in 5th since i got it. Then there is the hard starting problem. After its driven for a while it doesn't start well and runs like crap for a couple starts these are most likely seperate problems but lets see what we can do shall we.

    Thanks for the help

You would need an EVTM manual to see if all the vacuum lines are installed properly. A breakout box may also be necessary to check if the ECU is receiving the proper signals.

I would throw out the stock carb and put in a non-computer controlled Escort carb.
Otherwise you would need a shop manual and a couple of days to figure what is erroring out. Not worth the dime or the time. Coincidentally, I also have a B6!

sounds good. anyone got a list of parts and a walkthrough? I'm competent enough to do the work but modding is new for me i figure i'll need to make some delete plates for the EGR and stuff and what about all them sensors on the firewall connected to the carb via vacuum?

I threw all of mine out. Useless. The only one I have, is an idle up solenoid for my A/C and P/S. Only one vacuum line from base of carb to distributor vacuum advance.
          Here's my engine.

is that carb a direct fit then or do I need an adapter?

My check engine light is hooked up to my choke cable, to remind me that it's still choked. No ECU. I installed a cruise control computer and a Viper remote lock system instead.

You always need a carb adapter. I personally prefer aluminum welding the manifold and redrilling the holes at a machine shop.

Use the search box for "Weber"

                Here's a carb that's already jetted for a 1.6

Forget about that last carb. I just noticed it has feedback. Sorry about that. You want a non-feedback carb. Check if this carb is a non-feedback carb.
                  Also check on this one.

The only electrical wires for the carb should be for electric choke and idle up.

Look on ebay for an '81 - '86 Ford escort carb. I just replaced my Weber 32/36 with one and I like it a lot better. Look up Rocketman carb adapter and contact him. He made me one for my Escort carb and it works great. Listen to Bravekozak, he was the first one to mention the Escort carb. He knows what he is talking about. Escort carbs can be had cheaper than Webers too. You will have to figure out the throttle cable and the electric choke. My carberetor was NOS for $60.00. Doesnt have a throttle kiccker though, so I will eventually have to find one. No biggie since I never use my air.

                      What is the compression cold/hot?

I remember from your earlier post that you may have an ICM issue. +1 on the compression check. I never ran my B6 with the original carb. Started out with a Weber. The original might be a little small for a 1.6 but I'm just guessing.

ok so an update. pulled the cat off the car and as i suspected plugged up and busted inside. power is better now. Now on to the intermittent loss of go in general. Pulled ICM out of the car today took it to auto zone and they cant test these particular ICM's but they are more than happy to sell me a 200 dollar distributor. So the real question i guess is, Is there another possible solution. Car starts fine most of the time but randomly while driving cuts out and dies, thank god i'm never more than a few blocks from home as I still am yet to get this car to a reliable state. buthen trouble starting for usually a couple days after one of these episodes, then again one day just like nothing happened. Any input would be helpful.

so you think compression is still part of the equation? seem electrical to me.
