  • A/C two vs. three relays

I have a question for all Festiva factory A/C experts. Which relay is not used/connected on a manual transmission Festiva with factory A/C? Number 1, number 2 or number 3? They made both a two relay and three relay rubber cover. Do you know what the purpose of each relay is for?

Good question I was gonna ask after I pulled a full ac from a 93 manual car it had 3 relays and my current ac has 2. And the gl I just got has a total different looking a/c system I figured it's factory on the gl because the relays are on the driver's side.
Sorry to add to the confusion, but I too would like to know.

The auto cars had a fan for the A/C. if you have a schematic that might help. Or maybe it's the difference in factory and dealer A/C?

I don't have an '88 EVTM. Can somone who has one please check if there is a schematic for two relays under AIR CONDITIONER?
The '89 EVTM shows that #3 A/C relay is used for the condenser fan motor in an automatic.

For a carb, when you press the A/C button power flows from the 15A heater fuse to the A/C switch relay (#2). When the switch relay is energized, power from the ignition switch flows to both the A/C control amplifier under the dash and to A/C relay #3 which immediately turns on the rad cooling fan.
The control amplifier will send power through the accelerator switch (to disconnect on normally open, on full throttle via shortest path to ground). Otherwise, power goes through the thermostatic switch (to disconnect on normally open when too cold), then through the refrigerant pressure switch (to disconnect on normally open when there is low freon pressure) and finally to the compressor clutch.

Wow carb a/c systems are screwy.

If anyone wants to trade a working basic v-belt a/c system from a FI festy for an a/c system out of a power steering festy, give me a pm. I will pay you what you think as fair for the difference, because the condenser is a bit beaten up and quite a few of the rubber mounts for the lines have deteriorated and have broken, but I do have knew o-rings on the lines, and I do know the compressor clutch engages. The person who sold it to me told me it was in working order before it was pulled, I just don't feel like tracking down a new drier for it.
