I recently bought an 89 LX. The cam timing gear bolt was broken and dowel pin sheared off flush. I got the broken bolt out. Are there any fixes for getting this dowel pin out?

Pull the cam, drill it out, install new pin? Replace cam.Contact me for information about Festiva Madness!

Kinda figured that might be the answer. Thank you. Is that pin readily available? I had tried drilling a little to see how hard the piece is and it seemed hardened, only seemed to shine it some. Will it be a machine shop job to get it out?"Blue92"- 92L 5 spd, original owner- 185K, B8,DD..

Will the cam from my old 92 efi engine work? Is there a difference? I know from the shop manuals that the 89 doesn't have lash adjusters."Blue92"- 92L 5 spd, original owner- 185K, B8,DD..

I think so as well. The only difference that I know of is to check and be sure the cam has a lobe to run the fuel pump if you have a carby car. IIRC, all the Festies have that lobe. I THINK the aspire cam didn't have it.Contact me for information about Festiva Madness!

Thanks for the info, guys.
Yes, it is a carbed 5 speed. Would the HLA's also swap? Loss of valve adjustment needs wouldn't hurt my feelings.
William, did your post mean you have one you'd sell? My original engine runs (not great, but runs) and I would just as soon as soon keep it intact for right now.
For right now, getting the LX running isn't a top priority as my 92 L is my DD and the LX will be giving up all the deluxe goodies little by little. I do want to get it running eventually. Hopefully I'll soon end up with a "92 LX" or so it will read on the hatch."Blue92"- 92L 5 spd, original owner- 185K, B8,DD..

^ Yep, the 88LX I bought a long time ago had that same issue, and I had to gently tap the cam loose with a rubber mallet to be able to slide it out. One journal was scarred a bit, and I ended up cleaning it up with a dremel and reinstalling the cam. I don't remember how I got the other half of the pin out of the cam, but once I did I took it to a Fastenal store and they matched it up with a roll pin. I put another 50,000 miles on that motor before a friend ran it out of oil one day while he was driving it. Snapped a rod bearing cap clean in half lol.No festiva for me ATM...
