I havent' bought an air filter for my carburetted Festiva for some time. It's one of those circular doughnut shaped filtres. I just vacuum, inspect visually, and reinstall.
Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.

Must be nice. After 2 or 3 months of driving I had to replace my paper air filter. The white would be just black.

Of the two (K&N vs. opening up the airbox), I think the airbox mod is more useful, and of course as you say free. The stock EFI paper filter probably flows more air than the upstream hole (on the intake side of the VAF) will admit anyway. And vacuuming the paper filter is certainly a valid strategy to get more use out of it. Rock Auto has EFI paper filters for as little as $4.14. So buy several to save on shipping.
