  • Oooops! Broken wire help!

I was getting the engine ready to put in the GL, giving it a final check, and I spot a broken wire on the back of the 5 spd MTX.
Musta bumped it sometime putting it together - It wasn't broke before

I think it might be the reverse switch wire???? 2 green wires to the switch or whatever it is, on the back of the tranny

I have a 4 spd laying around, and I am thinking I can use the same wire/switch from the 4 spd, to replace the broken one, on the 5 spd.

    Am I correct on this?

    PIC!

Yes. All it is is a simple metal ball that gets pushed to make electrical contact for the backup lights when you put it into reverse gear. Or, you can just buy a new one. They got smart on the B emgineering change and put more support around the wires so that they wouldn't break as easily.

Make sure you don't mix up the fourth gear switch on your four speed.

As a temporary fix you might be able to cut away a portion of "housing" and solder the connection back on.
        Good till you get another.
when you put the new or new to you one in:

        1) put the front up on ramps or jack it up.
This will reduce or eliminate fluid loss from the tranny.

        2) Make sure you have a seal between the tranny housing and the switch, otherwise it will not work.

        3) disconnect the switch from it connector, behind the tranny, so you can install the new switch without twisting the wires.
Then plug it back in and check your backup lights.

This was a little surprising! The reverse switch from the 1988 4 spd has the better switch! It has protective sealer on it, and the switch from the 1992 5 spd does not!

The one on the left is the 1992 (broken one) the one on the right is the 1988

Did you get the seal, or are replacing the seal that fits between the tranny housing and the switch?

It is a copper seal, sorta like what's on a spark plug, I reused the old seal. I'll keep an eye on it for leaks.

My 89 switch wire was broken and looked like your original switch. I would say the 88 four speed had a replacement switch to correct the problem.

That same thought, had occurred to me!
