  • How do you get interval wipers on a 92 L?

I've been busy lately swapping goodies from my 89 LX to my 92 L. Lots has gone smoothly but I particularly wanted the interval wipers. The combination switch isn't a direct swap with the different headlight switch configuration. Is there a way to rewire the combination switch or to move the interval module to make it work? I guess I would like to use the whole orange unit if that's even possible. If there's a previous post about this, I haven't been able to find it.

I had three different comination switches, with and without interval, and they were all plug and play. Please explain. Any terminals can be moved around, but you shouldn't have to. Please post pictures. The smarts for interval is in the module.

If you type in a search phrase. be sure to use double quotes.

e.g. "combination switch" or "interval wipers"

I do believe that some of the stalks are able to be dismantled..

I would also obtain wiring diagrams for each car (to be sure) and double check to see what is different.

Late 80s 626s had the variable-intermittent wiper modules. 323s from the same period also have them, but more commonly in single-speed intermittent. Also check out Mercury Tracers. Look for those specific cars in the JY. The tip-off for compatibility is the square stalk, like on Festys.

100_1164.jpg100_1165.jpgThe green, red and whites wires on the plug out of the stalk on the 92 switch connect Grn to Red/bk, wht to Red/y and red to bk on the harness. I can't find that plug on the 92 wiring diagram, although I see the wire colors on the headlamp switch.

I do have the diagrams for each car but haven't laid them out side by side yet to see if I can make sense of it. The interval module itself does seem as if it could be swapped, but I was hesitant to tear into them and risk having 2 messed up.

I may have to go to the Atlanta area. The only 2 jy's that allow PnP within 60 miles have nothing of the sort, but I'll keep those models on the list. Thanks.

If I was in your position,

Get a largish container and some zip lock bags and tear them down..

Before that though, I'd have a look over the wiring diagrams to familiarize myself with the assemblies..

If you notice that parts can be transferred across, make notes and try it out.. If it fits, good news..

If the piece that is transferable needs a wire or two, translate the wires necessary and then reassemble the assembly and test it out in the car.. All you need is the car switched to accessories.. Test all the functions and if all check out (indicators, wipers, h/beam and l/beam) all good.

Oh and double check your work.

                  This

I snagged mine from a late 80s 626 as well. You don't need the entire assembly, just the switch, and stalk, which will fit perfectly into the Festy unit.

Of course you will have a useless cruise control switch on the stalk as well, unless you plan on rigging something up from a Ford Tempo or something. You might be able to find a 626 without cruise control, but still has the variable wipers.

Here is a link that explains the deal in the first post. Pretty sure this is what is going on. For the intermittent part though "ALL YEARS" will interchange.

^He didn't get it quite right, though. The early years are straight switches carrying the full current. There are no relays. The later years had relays on the car body, and the MFS controls them.

I compared carb and EFI wiring diagrams to find this out, and then used a multimeter to test it.

EDIT: From my postings toward the bottom of the thread.

So that should be why it isn't working right in the 90s models. The 90s design expects a separate ground for the control side of the relays whereas the 80s is just grounding the headlights to turn them on and switching between circuits to do the Hi/Lo control.

This should be very simple to do.

Thanks for all links and advice from each of you. The members of this forum are as GREAT with the dispensing of wisdom and assistance as the search feature is cumbersome.
For right now I just put everything back together in my DD. I am using the old blue water sailing axiom of "don't mess with something that is working unless a replacement is in hand".
If anyone has one of either available, PM me.
