Just bought a Festiva. Bad throwout bearing

How hard is it to get to the throwout bearing?
Do you have to pull the engine or drop the trans
or can you do it without having to pull it?

Normally on all my cars I pull the engine, replace the rear main
seal and do all the rest of the engine work while it's out, but in
about a week this will be my main driver and I don't have time to
go through all that yet so I'm wondering if the TOB can be done
quickly. The clutch works well, by the way.



Secondly: I made a list for this car for future stuff.

Can you tell me if these are decent quality parts for
this car? I know I use most of these brands on my
Subaru's without concern.

And lastly...is there anything else that I should replace on this?

Added the water pump, thermostat, timing belt and spark plug wires.

Theoretically you can take the transmission out without removing the engine, but after disconnecting axle shafts, linkage and wiring, you just have one engine mount, exhaust, and a few wires and hoses left. Personally I think it's easier to stab the transmission when it's out and since you are going to replace water pump and timing belt also.

Lakeland.... which festy did you pick up? it only takes about an hr to pull the trans.. so in a few hrs you should be able to get it apart and replace the TOB and be good. Im pulling a 5 spd today too. lame. I just drop the cross member when I do it. And with an alignment tool its easy to go back together.
The edit is time sensitive.

emailed the guy and he sent me pictures. Looks like he thought it
was a race car. I passed on it.

Just had my throw out bearing spill grease on my clutch. And crank key go bad

Dang...so new crank at this point, huh? I'm thinking I'll
be changing that out sooner rather than later. Any valve
damage? Not sure if these are interference engines or not.

Had you replaced the TOB before or was it the original?

And how exactly do the TOB's sit on this car? I would imagine
just some clips, but where can I find replacement clips and what
would that part be called?

Rhodeski what happened! Slipping clutches and breaking crankshafts that's hard work. The TOB slides onto the input shaft on the trans. You have to finagle it on but it will go. There isn't much grease inside the bearing don't know how it could spill out and take out your clutch. Non interference engines.

Yea they are no interference. And no just gonna weld the key in there.

Wait, really? These are non-interference engines?
If so, that makes me happy

Not sure how long welding the key in there will work.
Besides, trying to fit the crank pulley on afterwards may
be kind of difficult too. Good luck, man Let me know
