i have had to take my little rust bucket on a quite a few rides on a highway going anywhere from 60 to 80 mph and my car has developed a little bit of a squeal in the rear end (i think ). ive made my guesses and ruled out sticking breaks, wear indicator , e brake malfunction. my car is extremely rusted underneath so if anything wanted to give out now would be the time since i start collage this monday. but do you guys have an educated guess on what it would be?

When do you hear squeal? Going over bumps? Going around corners? Going up hills? Or all the time?

You get at rear bearings through the dust cup. Little chance of meeting rust in there as it's all protected. For photos of how to do it see a previous post in this forum called "Repair photos and videos"

ok i was completely wrong, its only been a few days but ive realized it is in the front of the car because its happening when im coasting and when i turn to the right. then i was able to get my car up on a lift and found my outer cv boot had torn all the way around and needs to be replaced. so first i need the easiest way to replace just the boot ( dont have the money for an axles)?? . so i was messing with the car a little in my drive way and it didnt sound like it was coming from the inside of the wheel assembly, where else could it be coming from?? i was talking with a mechanic and he was saying when the break pads get worn unevenly they can cause imbalance and at high speed can cause the squeak, due to vibrations. is that true for our cars??

About 2 weeks ago I got a brand new not remanufactured cv axle for 30 dollars on rockauto. A boot kit costs 20? Maybe 25. Then you have to take it all apart to put the boot on anyways. Ask a buddy to borrow a 20 and get a new one.

What were you doing in the drive way to make it squeek? Obviously you were not driving at high speed

well should i replace both sides or just the one? probley shouldnt have but i raised the the car off the ground put it in neutral and spun the tire and it was just a slight squeak but enough for me to think its not coming from the cv joint XD

Raise the car off the ground, start the engine, put it in gear and listen as you go through gears, vary speed, apply brakes, and turn steering wheel. Might tell you something. To isolate one wheel I wedge a piece of wood under the other to stop it turning. Good luck.

could it be the dust shield scraping the rotor? if its really rusty the shield might be disintegrating or gone altogether.

Ive dont that but not at diffrent speeds, i know it only happens when the steering wheel is turned to the right at all, at low speeds it sounds worse (25 or less) i dont hear it when going any faster .sounds like drive side tgats also the side with the torn boot .idk if its a shield .. if it is itll be an easy fix!

New info: its a very noticeable squeak at 15mph or less , in reverse and turning right. I think its my wheel bearing but when i do the shake test there is no movement even when i have just that wheel on the ground .and its getting louder and louder. Almost getting to the point of just bringing it in to a shop.

Standard test for CV joint is to drive slowly forward and backward in tight circles and listen for noise, sometimes described as "popping" sound, from axle.
A test for bearings is to swerve to the right and left while driving and listen for sound. Problem is in wheel opposite sound.
