  • Cooling fan questions?

I have a 91 L 5 speed that is completely stock aside from the funtop canvas roof. Prior to my ownership someone cut the harness wiring for the radiator cooling fan and put a switch on the dash from the battery that goes directly to the cooling fan. I am curious to know if there is a relay somewhere either in the engine bay or under the dash that may be bad that would cause someone to create a manual bypass like this. I have a donor car to get another fan (a mechanic friend suggested the fan may have shorted a few windings causing me to start going through switches recently) and that part of the harness. I noticed when investigating this problem originally that there is a 20Amp fuse in the fuse block in the dash for the cooling fan, but it appears to be in working order (since I pulled it out to check its condition). I want to fix this correctly when I fix it this time if at all possible since it is my current daily and only running vehicle for the moment. Thanks in advance for any help regarding this matter

If I remember right, the relay is in the engine compartment, left side, just behind the headlight and just forward of the radiator bottle, and is more easily accessed when the radiator reservoir bottle and battery are removed.

If you put it all back together you may find that the sensor is just bad. When I got my car some idiot had run an extra wire to the battery to make the fan work. I got rid of that and unplugged the sensor and the fan came on. if a person were too cheap to buy a sensor, that would be a perfect place to run a pair of smaller gauge wires and hook a switch up there. I just replaced the $25.00 sensor.

Have you looked at a schematic?

Relay is near lhs headlight. Mine has a yellow/red and yellow wires running to the fan.
Other two wires run to the temp switch.

          Easy fix

Thanks for the ideas. I'm going to check more into it either later today if I have time or later this week if I can get my supervisor to let me get a day off or something
