  • 92' crankshafts in a stock engine festiva...

I looked up engine assemblies for a 92 festiva. It gave me a choice of a 22mm crankshaft engine or a 27.7mm crankshaft engine. My question is, will the 27.7 engine fit in the same car with the same transmission that the 22 engine came out of?
The person on the phone said it will not.

Is this the difference in large nose and small nose crank ? Like 93 had large only and 92 had
      Both later 92 had large.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is can you tell what you have by looking at pullie bolt spacing?

        Yes. Roughly speaking (drawing)

        O o O
<----- Large nose, bolts are in a a square pattern, like on a wheel, with a centering peg in between two of the bolt holes.

        O O

        O _ O
        | | <----- Small nose, trapezoid bolt pattern, with a notch instead of a peg for locating the pulley on the pulley boss

        O O

Edit: well my awesome typed out picture didn't work.

The guy told me, in Feb of 1992 they went to a larger crankshaft (27.7) because there were problems with the 22.

So the 27.7 will bolt right up to the tranny?

We pulled a small nose crank engine out of your car and put a large nose back in.

Ok, That's right. That's the engine we have to replace. It's eating oil like 3 quarts every 200 miles.

Yea dude your 10 threads clearly state that bluntly. Why dont you FIX it instead of swapping engines when you probably dont have to. The last engine was just a bad head gasket, this one has stuck rings, which I warned you about before you came, while you were here, and several times this month.

I made it quite clear before you drove down here that the engine was a gamble, thats why I didnt charge you a single dime for it when i had $50 in the damn thing myself, and on top of that I put 8 hours into doing seals gaskets AND swapping YOUR engines! It sat for who knows how long in a junk yard, and tirns out its a good LARGE NOSE ENGINE! Good compression and seals and you want to throw it away for lazyness! the next junk yard engine is probably going to be the same way, but with 20+ year old seals!! Fix what you have, steam/fog the snot out of it with seafoam ALOT until it either quits burning oil or blows up, or take it out and do it right. Cut out all this woe is me BS and get it done! You cant tell me in a weeks time since this threadhttp://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/showthread.php?54317-Problem-with-oil-consumption&p=666389#post666389 you have ran a bottle of MMO for 300+ miles and done an oil change and driven another 300 miles to know its still burning as much oil.

/e on a side note I'm glad pu241 was kind enough to fix the errors in this thread. I'm sure it was confusing people calling a crankshaft a camshaft.

                    Thanks zoom, I needed that.
I know this engine was a gamble & I don't blame you at all. I also know I hardly know anything about engines.
I will do what you just said & if it doesn't work, no problem, but I will not throw the engine away.
Thanks pu241 for fixing this thread. I don't look like such a dummy now.

Sorry i just re read and i came off a bit strong but seriously the worst case you blow it up and you need a new engine anyway.

Fog it with seafoam, through the pcv valve hose into the intake. Do it a couple times if thats what it takes.

Wondering about putting an ounce of MMO, or so, into the spark plug holes and let it sit a day or two before firing it backup.

sea foam through the intake will help with carbon buildup, but for stuck rings a piston soak like John suggested is probably the best bet. Or at least give it a piston soak then fog it. I'll leave the MMO vs sea foam debate to someone else!

I have been doing some research on this and I need to do the piston soak then fog it. I'm partial to sea foam, I use it in my Scooter and lawn equipment, So I will use the sea foam for both. I have never used MMO or even seen it before.
It will take me a week to do this. G-dine is painting the car & I'm away to work right now, but I will video this when I do it & post it here.

That's cool Zoom, I needed a kick in the pants anyway. I keep looking for answers only because my knowledge of engines is very slim. I just need to go out there and do it & not be afraid of screwing something up!
Thanks again for all the work you did removing the one engine & preparing & putting the other engine in. Have you worn out the spring compressor I gave you?

Day two spin several times make huge mess , rock engine back and forth for half hour , level pistons refill all plug holes let sit 24 hrs . Day three rock every hour , half turn one way half turn the other . Level pistons REFILL . Day four . Rock pistons with sharp sudden pushes every half hour . Move everything within twenty feet and crank engine 30 seconds . Clean mess install plugs start seafoam the crap out of booster line START AND RUN TEN MIN AT 4G . Pay epa fine and change oil and run crap out of it for an hour . WORKS EVERY TIME .
