The shift gate isn't that difficult to replace, I may have another one at home I can't remember if I used it or not. At the very least don't junk that trans!

If that is indeed what broke that would be awesome if you can find it! I won't know until it's out and torn open.

You missed out, there was a really clean NA miata up around Lima for $1500. High miles but looked to be cared for. Had brand new tires on 17" enkeis too.

Nice! I was mainly looking at something newer with lower mileage that my credit union would finance. Probably won't be until next year though.

What's the possibility that when I pushed the shifter too hard into 5th gear to try to get it to engage that I just ended up yanking the selector pin too far out of the transmission? Or is that even possible?

Well I went out a little while ago, and played around with the shifter. It feels like there is a pin or rod that the shifter feels disconnected from. It's hard to explain. It feels like trying to push a shifter around with another shifter to get it into gears. I can get it to go into gears to limp it around, but that is it. To be honest the shifter gate feels fine, since pushing what I think is a rod, or pin around feels like it has defined gateways to each gear.

That sure sounds like that internal shift linkage bracket. Pull trans pop apart and weld it. Replace seals and throw it together. If you fought the gears too much you may need a syncro kit too. Overhaul kits used to be on ebay cheap. Probably even better now through one of the importers.

That is beyond my ability. So it looks like I will just sell this 5-speed to someone who wants to fix it up, and I will just keep my eye out for a good 5speed. Will Aspire 5-speeds bolt right in with no modifications? Wish I knew this was going to happen because a junkyard near me had a Aspire with a 5-speed. But it is long since been crushed.

This is the bracket that breaks.

It holds the shift gate but the shift link is the one that cracks it.

I can't identify the exact piece that normally breaks. Are you saying that whole assembly?

I think this is what he's trying to show you. It's a cracked shift gate out of a Festiva 5 speed. Imagine it tuned 90º counterclockwise to compare it to the other photo.

My brother - in - law welded it back together and it reinstalled in the transmission.

Thanks, thats it exactly! The pivot for the linkage lifts and shoves, it bends a little for 999 times. Then it breaks the very last time it bends. seriously I believe that welding in this case is stronger than original.
