  • Engine lifter tick/and lower end knock.

Hi everyone I'm new to the forum. I own a 93' festiva L. It has 197xxx miles on it and has had the timing belt, headgasket, and water pump changed from the previous owner and I've had it about 4 months now. Recently the ocassional tick has gotten more regular and now it's to the point of almost a knock... How hard would a rebuild on the engine be?(my local scrapyard just crushed a pristine 93 like mine or that would have been my first choice)... Also my rear passenger spindle is stripped and I have no cars to get parts from locally. Any input would be appreciated because I love the car and don't want a rebuild or engine swap to be the reason I get rid of it! Thanks

Just replace the lifters. They are cheap and can be replaced in 1 hr. When they go bad they do sound very ugly- The spindle-just post a WTB (Want to Buy) Nitro-

If you want help, the first thing you need to do is get a little more specific with your location.
"United states" just doesn't cut it.

I agree. Could be someone close by that has the needed part.

WOW I'm overwhelmed by people replying unlike most of the forums I'm a part of haha. I'm out of Central pennsylvania sorry for the vagueness of my profile. When replacing the lifters what all besides pulling the head does that entail? I'm a smallblock chevy guy and I've never opened up any other engines

You don't pull the head its not a small block chevy lol.
No push rods the lifter/ lash adjusters are in the end of the rocker arms. Pull the valve cover remove the rockers and swap the lifters out of the arms.
A repair manual would help you out but not necessary.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.

I'll find myself a repair manual haha... So you just pull off the rocker arm shaft, remove the old lifters, and drop in the new ones? Seems straight forward and if it fixes it that would make me extremely happy lol

1 hr job and your done, just make sure you loosen & tighten the shaft bolts evenly. You are overcoming the valve spring pressure of a couple of valves. So you just loosen and tighten evenly to prevent damaging the the threads in the head. I also bump the starter over to remove the valve cover. It wants to interfere with he valve body sometimes. And dont use used lifters just get new ones (encase that was a thought)

Does anyone have a thread of this job? I'm still in high school and have only messed with old v8's so this is all kinda scary to try on my daily driver

Its even easier than a V8,just pull the valve cover and remove the rocker shaft retaining bolts. If it was a difficult job I would let you know. Its as difficult as changing spark plugs in an aluminum head....easy
just make sure you read what I posted above.
