  • Knocking?

My festiva was sitting for a while about 2-3 weeks and I was trying to sort out my headlamp issue and so I decided to start up the festiva and check everything to make sure everything was going fine. I started it and now it seems the engine is knocking. Checked the oil and added some, but still knocking. I am thinking its a lifter it is coming from the right side of the engine. It did seem like it was going to clear up when the engine warmed up a bit, but then resumed at the same amount of noise. I was going to pull the valve cover off to check it out but after I pulled the intake hose off a bunch of oil came out from it. I figured I would ask about it before I got any farther. Could the engine be ready to blow? Arguing with myself if it would be worth pulling an engine for it.

Maybe some thicker oil (20w-40)? Friend of mine put that in his old 60's f100 to stop a knock and it worked.

Lifters are cheap and they sound ugly to the point of a knock when they really freeze up. Dont go thicker oil for now. Do a engine clean and change the lifters when you drain the engine cleaner. And run normal oil and see if its gone. Also the oil in the breather isnt the end of the world.

ok thanks just its taking a lot of oil in and it is noticable in the exhaust. It isnt dripping out but it certainly is burning it.

Well thats a little more info-You should do a compression test. The oil in the breather is from compression ring blow buy. It would show up right away on you gauge. Sometimes you can buy some time by doing a chemical engine clean. It can loosen a stuck ring, but when its coming through the breather, its a sign of things going down hill. You probably already checked your PCV right?

although it doesn't look like much oil is around there.

There may be carbon stuck in the top of the valve cover, stuck under a plate that can cause oil to puddle right where it shouldn't.

As for the knock...use a pint of A TF added to the oil.
l just put an engine in one of my feisty and it had sit for a while before it got installed.
Upon firing it up it had a very loud knocking from the lifters. Added atf and the knock went away within 30 seconds

Be sure to change oil afterwards. Dont want the atf in there for very long.

Just drive it to see if it goes away. The lifters on these engines don't like to sit they go dry. After about 10 min of driving it usually goes away.

                    Thanks everyone.
I will add some ATF and drive it a little, change the oil and filter, and see what happens.

I swear, that really had me worried, still does, but not as much now.

Ok done put half quart of atf in and the rest 10w-30. Drove it around for half an hour and it has started to sound a tiny bit better. That might just be me getting excited, but this engine just has to last me 2-3 months then I ship out for the military and will build a little wealth for a waaaaay better festiva.

Drive it till it blows and stay safe in the military. I've driven some cars that I thought the engine would blow at anytime. Never happened, though. One of them used so much oil that I would use the used oil from the company trucks. Wound up crashing it before blowing the engine.

cool thanks probably just a lifter. It might clear up when I get some more fresh oil in it and really get it cleaned out.

I'm experiencing a similar issue, the engine is knocking right at start up, and then quickly goes away....? Thinking something might be getting a lack of oil in the valve train? Rockers possibly? Bought some synthetic oil and a new filter to try out, but I'm working on a few other things right now, and have yet to try it.
