  • B6 Festy isn't running right

I had been driving my B6 festy for quite some time, including several weeks of paper route driving. One morning I shut it off to unload, and 10-15 minutes later, Couldn't get it to restart. FINALLY got it to run by fiddling with the VAF connection a bit, but still very poorly. Barely enough to get home. Stalling, etc. I assumed it was the VAF. Put the old B3 VAF on, no change. Heard buzzing from TPS, figured that was it. Replaced. Better, but it still is bogged down at idle, but at least it runs. Kicker- when I unpluf the VAF, it idles perfect. Will obviously stall as soon as I give it any gas though. Plug it back in, bogbogbogstall.

    WTF?
    Buck.

Sounds VAF related. Clean the heck out of it. The b3 vaf wont like the b6 swap. So cant really judge based on that.

I ran it on the b3 vaf for over a year with no issues.

But I have a b6 vaf in it now. It is screwy with both, and this issue happened instantly. Surely both VAFs didn't go bad at the same exact time....
      Buck.

Ya doesn't sound like the VAF if you have exact same issue after changing it out

Perhaps a coincidence that it fired up after wiggling the connector? Or possibly corroded connector (although I'm assuming you took a peak at the connector while swapping VAF's)

Have you thought about the fuel side of things instead of electrical? Like fuel pump and/or relay, filter, etc

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

I had a vaf act up on my way home from work one day.....I carried a spare with me. It ran worse with the known good spare I carried with me. Cleaned the first one real quick and made it home with that one. So they can act up after sitting for some amount of time.

It shouldn't run at all with the VAF unplugged.... Weird

When I bought my white 93GL, it would run (only at idle) with the VAF unplugged and not pressing the accelerator. This is called limp mode....I think. If you plugged the VAF connector back in....it was a no start. With the VAF unplugged, it would die if you pressed the accelerator. The lady got frustrated with it after paying $1800 and sold it to me for $500. I put on a $10 used VAF and it has run perfect ever since.

Incidentally, here is a good VAF testing procedure: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...92volumeai.pdf

It sounds like it's misfiring when the VAF is plugged in. Like I unplugged a spark plug wire.

Check your fuel pressure I had 1 do this and the pump was bad.
It could idle all day but not drive

It only idles when the VAF is unplugged though.

Archive solve post: New(used)ECM solved this problem

Archive notes: put B61K ECM in upon swapping B6. When issue cropped up, after a lot of other troubleshooting, I tried a good used B3 ECM which solved it. Bought and installed used B61K ECM and it has been problem free since.
