  • intermittent manual trans failure

My first post and my grammer leaves a little to be desired......

I have 1988 Festiva with a manual 5 speed. It does the most curious thing. When it works, it works great. No slippage or lag or any other complaints. However, you can be driving down the road and it will just stop pulling. Just like it went into netural. Speed doesn't matter. There honestly seems to be no outside cotributing factor. Here is where it gets above my skill level. When it fails the speedo will be registering at say 15mph. Also, with the car running and the clutch out, I can shift through the first 3 gears. Not 4th or 5th and i could grind reverse in but choose not to. One time it failed and I bounced the car up and down a few times by standing on the bumper. It started working again. Last time it failed I jacked up the pasenger side and tried spinning the wheel. it would spin in netural and in gear. I jacked up the drivers side. It would spin in netural but not in gear. So i went back to the passenger side and tried it again. It would now not spin in gear and I could drive it again. The fluid was changed after the first time it failed about a month ago. There was particles in the fluid. The car is unreliable and I'm out of ideas. Any Thoughts?

sounds like the ring gear rivets are sheared off. Time for another trans.

Question: could I replace the rivets? The car is not really worth much. I can't see putting a lot into it.

Also what are my options for replacement transmissions?

the rivets can be replaced with class 10.9 bolts, but at this point, there's likely much more damage due to the sheared rivets. Options for replacement transmissions include; Ford Festiva, 1988-93. That's about it. Aspire trans can be made to work, but involves changing a trans mount, and they have a different final drive ratio, which will alter your torque to the wheels, rpm in each gear, and your speedometer reading. Post a WTB in the classifieds, you never know what you'll find. I have one I'd sell you for $50, but shipping would be twice that.

Jim we shipped a hydro G series UPS for about $80, E should be a cheaper still. Might be worth at least punching in the weight on UPS's site.

This is what I found. The driver side axle was broke.

I believe I can trace it back to a transmission mount failure. Sounded like the bottom of the car fell out.
