          Yeah, that is the charcoal canister hose. you should probably put a bolt in that block it up since that does go to the gas tank.

            It appears that you've got a little in-line fuel filter in the space where the charcoal can goes.

            The "proper" filter is a good-sized can with bent pipes on bottom (input?) and top (output). I was having stumbling problems when cornering which turned out to be water in the fuel and had ordered a new fuel filter at Napa. I was shocked when I went to pick it up anyway (figuring it'd be nice to have a spare) and they demanded $28. What Napa sold me was a "WIX" p/n 33280. It's 2.5" diameter by 3" tall. It exactly matches what's in most of my Festies (FId ones, anyway).

              I wouldn't plug that if your cap isn't vented, your tank needs air as fuel is used. That is if you even still have the stock tank and not a fuel cell

                Been driving like this for almost a year now, there is no positive or negative pressure in the tank when removing the gas cap.

                      My understand is the charcoal canister is an environmental device which collects gas fumes from the engine when it isn't running so they can be fed back into the cyclinders when the engine starts, keeping them from escaping into the atmosphere. Same sort of thing as the PCV valve which keeps fumes from the crankcase from escaping into the atmosphere. A couple of times when I accidentally pulled one of the hoses off the canister when changing the #$@% fuel filtre I could smell fumes. That's how you know the hose from the canister has been disconnected. Without the canister you'd have no accmulated fumes to smell.

                        the older dudes might notice how much more Xpensiv FI fuel filters are vs carbed. also air filters. i know there's more pressure in a FI system but what makes a modern fuel filter 4X the cost? is this a decades long consumer scam? ford wants $36 wholesale for a motorcraft festiva fuel filter. without a bracket.
