  • '91 Festiva 3rd Brake light problem...

The Brake light turns on when the brake pedal is pushed in but it's no longer turning on when the hand brake is pulled...What gives? Any advice appreciated!

Unless I'm reading or not quite understanding the title and description wrong, you're asking/expecting the 3rd brake light to come on with the hand/emergency/parking brake lever pulled up?

As far as I know (and I'm far from being an expert) the only light to come on with the lever pulled up is the "brake" light on the instrument cluster.

If the dash brake warning light is coming on, check that you have enough brake fluid. It would not come on when you pull the parking brake lever up, since that is a purely mechanical, not hydraulic, function via the cable.

The hand brake should have no effect on any of the three rear brake lights.

You guys are right. I forgot that there is a sensor for that on the cable.

So if his problem is that the dash light isn't coming on when he pulls on the parking brake lever, there must be some disconnect involving the lever's sensor, under the driver's seat. Disconnected, or maybe grounded out?

its just a simple micro switch or plunger switch attached to the P brake ratchet mechanism. you can almost see it through the slot in the P brake console.

Let me clarify my question. Is the 3rd brake light suppose to light - up when the emergency brake handle is pulled up? Thanks and my apologies for not being specific.

No. Otherwise it would be on anytime the car is parked. With the park brake engaged of course

For anyone still curious about the parking brake - dash light.. Yes, there is a plunger switch (very similar to a door jamb switch like that for the dome light) that grounds when the handbrake is pulled. When the ignition is on... power to the dash + ground from the parking brake switch = "BRAKE" light illuminates.

That same switch turns the day time running lights off when the handbrake is applied.

As I understand it, the same "brake" light on the dash illuminates if you run low on brake fluid. Would the DRLs turn off if your mc was empty? Haha
