That piston damage is intake side, farthest from the plug. End gasses detonate. Timing must have been off. Engine heat looks ok, combustion heat..wow. With that much metal going by the exhaust valve the valves and seats should be leak checked minimum, hand lapped a good idea or get the head done best idea. With all the other stuff checked for rebuild specs you might get away with new pistons and rings and the bore touched up with a hone.
Pistons - rings and gaskets and some elbow grease ! Time it right and run it.
Intake side. How does that work? Is the detonation blowing small chunks, off the top edge of the piston, until it gets like we see in the pics?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Wow, that's some impressive carnage! If the rest of the car is in decent shape swap a B6 or B6D in there and you'll have a much more enjoyable little car.
