  • Starting problems

So guys, I'm having some problems. Seem to be getting worse, may just be in my head. I have a 90 festiva, with a 1.8 out of a 91 ford escort. At start up it seems to start and die, or it will start and rev up and down repeatedly some times, and some times die while doing so. And it seems to have a slight misfire at idle some times when warmed up or early in morning when just starting up. Just replaced plugs, cap rotor, any ideas?

Plug wires? People often forget to replace them too. Plus the O2 sensor is an item to be replaced whenever you do a tuneup.

The car throttle body and the computer are not agreeing on the air flow at idle. Possibilities are unmetered air getting to the throttle body, throttle stop or air adjustment out of range, air flow meter out of specification. A miss from any source will compound the symptom. I tried not to give you exact possibilities so that you will look at everything that could be causing this.

You have checked timing, timing belt, compression ? Low vacuum will not draw enough air to idle right too, but check the easy stuff first!

Not familiar enough with the 1.8, but compression specs for a B3 are around 200-210 PSI. If the 1.8 specs are similiar, your numbers are every low and you have worn rings, or top end (valve sealing) issues. This will effect idle and power. Certainly check timing and ignition basics first.

At your low altitude especially, agree with Dale.

Alright I will have to check into that. I did notice when I did my plugs, they were all white and chalky. And compression, I'll double check, but I did use a harbor freight gauge too so who knows if my gauge is crap, the car feels like it has power.

some of the chinese imported gauges have weak hoses that swell in and out enough like a balloon to knock 15% off the true amount.

I'll have to verify with a good one I guess.
