  • Interchangeable Alternators

I sold a 93 Festie with auto trans last October and the purchaser contacted me today that the alternator has quit working. I have a spare off of an 89 with 4 speed but notice that Rockauto lists a different part number for the alternators. Can anyone tell me if alternators are interchangeable between an 89 with manual and 93 with automatic? Thanks.

They are not interchangeable between an 89 and 93.

They can be interchanged if the plugs are swapped.

He's trying to be cheap, thinks he bought the car with a life-time guarantee.

What is with people these days thinking that old used cars come with a warranty? Some people never bother me when I sell a car and things break the next week. Others feel like they are entitled to unending repair because they feel they were purposely sold defective parts.

Yeah. That's what I was hinting at. I'd look at him like he was out of his mind, and say "sorry".

Looking at his POV, "It never hurts to ask." Not being worse off if the answer is no.

I would recommend not giving him an alternator. If it had died within a couple days, then yeah, it would be a nice gesture to help the guy out, but after 3 or 4 months? Chances are if you do this, the next time it needs tires, or brakes, or even an oil change, your phone will be ringing. I might offer to sell him the alternator for a good used price ($25? New is up near $100) so that he knows he has found a place to buy parts, but if you give it to him he will be back plenty more times, and not with money in hand. But yes, it can be interchanged, just have to swap plugs like drddan said.

                  My thoughts exactly

                  1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
                  1988 323 GT - B6T Powered
2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor

1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?
