  • should I pull the rack to do the inner your rod ends?

Title says it all. Inners are gone on the drivers side and i'm doing both if I can. I've been having vibration and alignment issues most noticeable on the free way. This car drives an average of 75mph every day. What can you guys suggest I do to simply the process. I read I have to drill something? My manual left this out for some reason. Thanks again!

Don't need to pull the rack. What year Festiva do you have? It makes s difference.

The 88-89 are a different thread than the 90-93. I did my 88 and didn't have to drill anything. I have heard some need drilled. Might be 90-93?
If you have a drill you can do it. It is a little tight in there, jack up the car, remove the wheel and you can reach there with a wrench. I used a good quality adjustable wrench, and broke the inner loose pretty easily.
Use blue Locktite thread locker on the threads of the new inner's.

There's a roll pin for each inner tie rod that needs to be removed; to get at it you need to turn the steering all the way to one side. If you can't see it, turn the steering all the way to the other side. Knock it out with something, then use blue Loc-tite instead of a roll pin when installing the new one.

You don't need to knock the roll pin out (actually, you can't since it's in a blind hole). As you loosen the inner rod end it will push the pin out, after you install the new rod end nock the pin back in. Sometimes it's a little bit of a bear to get the rod end to loosen, leverage is your friend over impact in this case. Try to get a long pipe on the wrench. I've never found one I couldn't remove and I've take them off of quite a few racks.

Be sure that it is just your tie rod ends and not the rack bushing that is worn out.
A friend of mine came over yesterday after getting a quote from a garage on replacing the
inner tie rod ends and I discovered that his tie rod ends were really not that bad but the right
rack bushing was totally shot. If it's the rack... sorry but I ordered the last rack that The Festiva Store had in stock yesterday.

Repeat: My 88 did not have pins. No place for them on the old inners.

I will get more. Just need cores to come back so I can ship them off for a rebuild. I may have to rob the festivas I have in the yard, but at 0F I don't feel like working outside in the yard.

thanks for the replys guys and sorry for the delay im super busy and this will come after the lower front oil seal is replaced.. and its a 93 festy so i imagine it has the roll pins. so just the leverage of loosening the inner rod end will push out the pins?? this is done from under the car im assuming???? funny how the haynes manual does not cover any of this

I can only say that was not my experience, i.e. loosening the tie rod pushing the roll pins out. I had to push them out myself. It was no big deal tho. Yes, under the car. If you have the pins, you will have to turn the steering all the way to one side or the other to access or even see them.
