  • Alternator belt squel

Replaced my alternator and the belt last week. The belt didn't make any noise for the first couple day but it started squealing upon start up a few days ago, and has gradually gotten worse to the point that tonight it squealed until I shifted into 3rd gear. It also squeals whenever I depress the clutch. I tried adjusting the tension as it was a bit loose; both bolts are as tight as I can get them, but it didn't help and I believe it's loosened back up slightly.

    Any ideas?

V belts stretch as they break in. Keep chasing the tension anytime you hear the squeal. Maybe you could borrow a seasoned mechanics opinion, one with Mitsubishi V belt experience. Proper tension and no squeals will get the best belt life and keep the battery charged better.

Don't feel like you are the lone ranger, belt companies have had so many problems with maintenance personnel installing belts properly that they have come up with nice simple solutions like this lol :

Oh yeah.....Mitsu belts, so much fun.....
Fresh belt, go as tight as you can. Let it bed it for 2 or 3 days, and do it again.....

Mine did this too. I changed the belt and it was OK for awhile but then I noticed it only squealed when the volt meter fell to 13 volts or less. I have another alternator that I might switch out. It doesn't squeal all the time, only if the volts fall a little.

Your volts are falling because it's slipping thus making the squeal.....tighten your belt, your alternator is fine.

The belt is tight and it does not squeal all the time. I have run experiments regarding what electrical devices are on or off. At times every thing will be turned on and no squeal, other times, nothing is on and get noise. If the reading is 11 volts I wait seconds while the volts climb to 14. This may only take 5 or 6 seconds.

Be careful, and don't over tighten. Just make it snug. I over tigthen one once using a pry bar and the next day my water pump started leaking.

Right chief......when the voltage is dropping it's cuz the belt is slipping.

Also, the bearings will wear out if the belt is too tight.

Other issuers can cause the voltage to oscillate. Regulator, loose wire, etc.

Well alternator seized up this afternoon and snapped the belt....caught it before it overheated luckily.

Maybe that bugger has been trying to seize for a while and squealing the belt.
