  • 5 speed transmission

so I have a broken 5 speed.... can I pull it apart and possibly order the parts to fix it? if not its broken so no harm done right?

  • #2
Before taking it apart I'd search the Internet to see if internal parts are available.
I haven't worked on one myself (since high school anyway). Mostly I read here that
people replace transmissions with another used one although I think also read about
    overhaul kits. Good luck.

see im confused though, most of those are just bearings not the gears?

If the gears are grinding its not the gears grinding..lol The brass syncros take the hit. The gear sets may not be available anymore, most rebuilders use "good used" if something is wrong with the actual gears. People with turbos take great trannys and shatter something bad ruining the tranny but the gearsets are often fine. Except where maybe the spider gear shaft made its exit lol !

Mine does it but spinning that fast they use oil. With the camp trailer in tow it burned 4 qts in 2 1/2 hours. Normal driving, 3 k miles and I might be 1/2 qt low when time to change oil and filter. Stop and add oil every couple hours should do it.

I drove her back from mount airy NC to benson NC. with no problems, just concerned to make a habit out of those kind of trips. do you know what your RPM's were in 4th at 70-80

4th at 70 is something like 3400 RPM, as our 5-speed carb is about 3100 in 5th @ 70. I would figure at 80MPH you'll be pushing 3800 or better. Stop every couple hours and check the oil, coolant, ect. My automatic would drive 85MPH (something around 4300RPM, I forget) for hours very reliably, as long as I kept up the fluids (it didn't burn at all under normal driving, say.. 65 or less). At 80-85 I was burning about half a quart per two hours.

Best off just sticking to the speed limit.

So I'm not the only one who has experienced the B3 interstate oil consumption. Glad to hear it, I thought I just had bad luck. The speed limit in a lot of places is 75-80mph, but unless you drive 85 you are being tailgated every 10 minutes by some SUV. I like to just go the speed of traffic. I drove my 89 auto across country and that thing used a quart an hour the whole way.

I don't have a tach in the carby car but towing the camp trailer at 55 in third , light head wind for a couple hours , it really went through the oil. The early 4 speed cars are geared low, forth sounds a few hundred higher than forth in the 5 speed car. Full throttle, somewhere above 4 thousand rpm, 2 hours, these are amazing engines really.
