Can you put some of the oil into a (small) glass container and see if it stratifies, and what settles out?

Good idea, but the oil needs to be thinned some with say ISO Heat or any other oil compatible liquid.
The segmented solid could then be analyzed.

or better yet, Bondo, do you know what oil was used in the last oil change?
If so, then an XRF of new oil verses this oil could tell you the if it is a metallic contaminate and what kind of metal(s) they are.
Then you could determine where it might have come from.
Better if you have the chunk of suspected piston ring its XRF finger print can be matched to that found in the oil.

Stick a bolt through the lid of a peanut butter jar and tighten a washer and nut down to it. Put some oil in the jar and screw the lid on, then stick the bolt into the end of a drill and run it for a minute or two.. This impromptu centrifuge should force the heavier metal to settle near the plastic wall of the peanut butter jar to see it.

When I spray the underside of my car in the fall with conventional oil (not synthetic) as a rust preventative I mix in some universal solvent (paint thinner)
so it will come out as a spray. If that's conventional oil Id try diluting with paint thinner.
