  • Valve Cover Torque?

I will be replacing the valve cover gasket tomorrow and cannot seem to find the torque requirements anywhere on the internet. I rented the torque wrench from Oreilly's already.

Do any of you know the torque specs on the valve cover bolts for the standard B3? I need to buy the hayne's or chilton's manual, I know.

Please be very careful to not over tighten...you can crush the gasket and it will leak or you can break off a bolt in the head.
The left front bolt is broken off on my 89 and I could not get the bolt out of the head.
I had to devised a clamp to hold that corner tight.
A Festiva manual (pretty easy to find on ebay) will server you better...at least I like it better.

hope you rented an in-lb and not a ft-lb wrench.

I don't see how anyone can overtighten it enough to crush the gasket. The grommets are what always get me, they always seem to crack and split with very little torque.

It's rubber (or rubber-like) so it wasn't exactly crushed but was deformed enough at the back right side to cause it to leak oil. That was over 10 years ago on my blue 90 L Plus before I put a new engine in.

I just tighten valve cover bolts by feel. It's not a critical torque. Just enough even pressure so that it doesn't leak, starting from the middle.

That is what I ended up doing. The wrench I rented only goes down to 25 ft/lbs so it was useless for what I needed.
