CA Emissions???

  • CA Emissions???

    Ill be moving to CA shortly and need to be able to pass emissions while there, currently my car has a BP with no cat. I plan on rear-turboing it in the future.
    My question is: In order for me to pass emissions before turboing it will i only need to install a cat, or is there more to it than that? Also how do I go about passing emissions once its turboed?

    you will need cat. has to be taken to smog referee to pass after turbo.

        Because you have an engine swap, you'll have to get the car inspected by the CARB referee even before you turbo the car. They will inspect all emissions hardware to meet or exceed equipment requirements for the model of car that was the donor of your engine swap. You should have proof of the swap coming from a newer vehicle, because they usually don't allow backdating of engines. You will need to get a California Legal Cat. The CARB referee can only be seen by appointment and the waiting period can be several months depending on the location your in and the volume of customers at the time you wish to get an inspection. When your vehicle is approved, you will be issued a new CA VIN tag that will show the car is an approved engine swapped car. After that you just take the car to any smog inspection station.
        Tip: The more OEM the swap looks, the better your chances of passing the inspection. California has very strong laws against aftermarket modifications that aren't CARB approved. You can have the cleanest swap in the world, and they can fail you for a cone filter. I have seen this many times. Also, use proper rubber caps and plugs on any unused vacuum ports. If they see a bolt plugging a hose then they will probably fail you. I have even had to route dummy hoses that were plugged to various locations because the ref didn't like all the plugged vacuum ports on the manifold. Often times, the referees are SAE engineer types that work at colleges and such. Think like an engineer and you'll be fine.

            Advance, by proof of the swap coming from a newer vehicle do you mean such as the VIN on the engine? And then as for the filter I should look for something that looks stock?

            This is starting to sound like too much of a pain in the rear... I was under the impression that since it is licensed and titled in a state that does not have emissions I would be good when I moved to CA is that true? Because if so then I may just end up figuring out a way to park it off base and then just ride my motorcycle on base lol
