  • Rear drum stuck on

I need help getting my rear drums off, the brakes arent locked up, so i can spin the drum freely, i took the spindle nut off and it must be stuck on the spindle, also does anyone have any tips for changing out the wheel bearing or rear brakes in general?

Big rubber hammer or something similar that will not ding the hub or drum.

Give it a small whack with a hammer to see if it frees it up. If not, try a medium whack.I like to put duct tape on the metal hammer to prevent hurting the thing I'm whacking.

Borrow a hub puller from one of the McAuto stores?

Only problem with those is the backing plate is in the way and wouldnt let me put say a 3 or 2 jaw puller on it... if i can find another backing plate i might just cut some slots to allow the puller... I'll see if i can source a hub puller though, looks like that might work

You need to get the kind that you use your lug bolts to bolt it to the hub. It has a slide hammer.

There are also ones like this:

I have had this before. I jacked the rear end up, chained the drum via the lug bolts to another car, filled the hatch with concrete blocks, and pulled the car so hard it came off the jack stands. It still wouldn't come off.

If the spindle nut is off and you can also get the keyed washer off, take a cheapo bottle torch and heat up the race of the outer bearing. Then cool it quickly. Do this several times and then use a punch and a hammer to shatter it. It should then fall off.

If the nut is off the washer won't hold the rest of the assembly on, so the issue is probably that the race has welded itself to the axle stub. That's what mine did years ago.

If you can't get the washer off you could probably shatter it the same way I did the race.

Put the tire back on and pound on it from behind. Make sure the car is securely supported so it won't come off it's supports when you strike the tire.

                      And release the parking brake.

Sounds like you will be putting on a whole new brake anyway, from the backing plate on out, if it is all welded together. Just unbolt the old backing plate from the rear (and the hydraulic line), toss it, install new brakes/drum backing plate that you will have to get anyway.

This worked for me and I think WmWatt suggested it to me a couple years back when I had the same problem. Put tire back on and smack it on different sides til she breaks loose.

Were you having bearing issues to start with? I have had the bearing fuse a couple of times recently and you can get it all apart with some decent effort. As stated above....take the nut off and leave the tire on the drum. Use a 3lb sledge from behind the rim and it will eventually pop all off leaving the inner piece of the inner bearing on the spindle. I used a dremel with a fiber blade to cut through the piece until I got to the spindle then used a chisel to spread it apart and pop it off the spindle. I had this happen once on each side at different times and the first one took me a day and a half of trying everything to get it apart. I had no electricity available the first time, the second time took me a 1/2 hour with the dremel. Good luck no matter what the problem actually turns out to be.
