Car still bucking....

....I have been having a bucking issue when my gas tank gets down to 1/4 tank since late May, after I replaced my fuel filter. When I fill up the tank there is no problem other than when I let off the gas she sounds throttley, like when a motorcycle is slowing down.
Last Sunday I took the pump out and cleaned out a bunch of rusty junk that had settled right below the sock area in the tank. I was hoping that would help with the problem but today I'm right around a 1/4 tank and she starts a bucking again.
I'm thinking I need a new pump BUT it only acts up at 1/4 tank. Is there a way to clean the sock area of the pump? Its sitting in gas all the time so it should be clean. I don't know. What you guys think it is?

Grab a new universal pump. I did and installed in under an hour. You'd have better luck getting a new pump along with a sock. Who knows whats gotten through that into your pump

Unless your tank is deformed, there's really no reason past the pump that could cause issues like this. Unless "quarter"tank really means empty cause your float is bent

But it only happens at a 1/4 tank, thats why I think its not timing related.

Unless your tank is deformed, there's really no reason past the pump that could cause issues like this. Unless "quarter"tank really means empty cause your float is bent

When I took the pump out (picture above) my gauge showed a little below 1/4 and thats what was in the tank.

My 92 L did something similar when I got it back running last year. It would start to miss at about 3/8 tank and get progressively worse as it dropped. Really bad below a 1/4. New fuel pump, sock and fuel filter cured it.

If you had the system pressure tested and the flow checked in a clear hose you will probably see air bubbles. If the pump can draw air above or on the top side of the sock you will start bucking and jumping as the pump delivers increasingly bubbly fuel to the engine.

A new fuel pump and sock will cure it but a new sock only installed correctly on the pump will cure it too. You should be able to see the problem if you look for it.

Another problem is this junk in the tank. If you are running quality fuel filters then your injectors are not getting plugged up but that needs some cleaning! In the tank. This abrasive residue is wearing the pump as is the air it is sucking as well. Air bubbles cause havoc to the impeller. If you find a good deal on a pump and you get the tank really clean that might be a good investment for the long term.

Do you have any suggestions on solvents to use to clean the tank out? I'm heading to a pull and save this weekend and hopefully the one lone festiva they have still has a pump in her. Plus if the tank looks clean maybe I'll try and pull that.

So I drove 30 miles to the pull and save on Sunday to try and get a fuel pump. I checked their inventory a few days before and it showed they had one. Before I drove there I tried looking online to see where it was because they show which isle its in and all. Their site was down and when I tried calling them there was no answer. So I drive all the way there and when I get there I see a sign on the door stating cash only, I go inside and say that on their site it says you can pay with a card, they say the computers are down. So I then drive to the nearest ATM and withdrawal some money to purchase the pump and whatever else I decide wore to pull off.
I go back to the pull and save and ask them if they could tell me where the ford festiva is located, the guy tells me he can't tell me exactly because the computers are down but they will be in rows 11-14. So off I go with my tool box in toe searching up and down the aisles and can't spot a festiva to save my soul. Go back inside and tell them I can't find the festiva and at this time the computers are back up and they tell me there is no festiva in their inventory. AHHH. What a waste.
Anywho, I do have a spare pump that works but it would not show how much gas I had on the gauge. Is there a way I can swap the part of the pump that sends the info to the gauge from one pump to the other?

Check your rubber air intake tube for any breaks/leaking. Also make sure air and gas filters have been changed within reasonable amount of time.

You should be able to swap out the actual pump itself. The sending unit stays the same normally when you just change the pump.

I use carb n choke cleaner on a rag and get after it to clean it.

I put a jeep grand cherokee fuel pump on my red car. The parts store wanted $450 bucks and a wait, the jeep one they wanted $60 bucks and they had it in stock. The gpm was a little higher but it all worked good and still is like 10 years later..maybe more lol. You should be able to swap pumps. If the bracket is beat or something you could use a hose clamp to mount it.
