  • Festy cranks but will not start............

It cranks but will not start. I have checked the fuses already. I'm not sure now if it's the fuel pump, brain, or something else.?
Anyway I can trouble shoot what it could be?
Car ran fine the last time I drove it.

The car has spark. I'm not sure if it could be a pump relay or the fuel pump itself. I tried to listen for the fuel pump but my hearing is crap....

Pull the cover, unscrew the lid to the fuel pump behind the seat. Tap on the top of the pump but do not break the connector or bend the tubing. If it starts replace what you beat on !

Tap the relay and try it.

wiggle wires and try it, like around the relay and the fusible link area and remember to try it after each test or you will not know which one it was.

Wiggle the switch, pop the bottom clam shell to wiggle the back of the switch.

Did you make the wife go in and pack out the 50lb bag of dog food at the feed store and did she throw it in the back like a pro wrestler ? Then check your crash sensor.

The basics must include the inertia switch if it is fuel injected. Stick your hand in the access hole and make sure it hasn't popped, else press it down .

I'm not sure where the relay is for the pump?

A small red button behind the rear driver's side strut tower. There will be a small access cover you take off the left plastic trim piece to reach it.

Ok, I tapped on the top of the fuel pump while I had someone else start it and the car started! So it must be the fuel pump.

Must be the original, it has a Mazda sticker on it.

Awesome! My daughter isn't here today or I would go look at my 89, but the relay is probably behind the battery if you ever need to find it. You may have got some bio fuel and it cleaned the tank, the fuel pump didn't survive pumping the junk to the filter. That one picture that shows the fuel it kinda looks funny. Can you use the old pump to pump the tank dry? Wipe out what is left. Put in a new fuel filter too of course. Some stores want the sock and fuel filter on the same receipt as the new pump before they honor the warranty on the new pump.

                    inertia fuel pump cut-off switch

If the car gets jarred it may switch the fuel pump down as if you've been in a wreck- then you'd see the red button sticking out the top

With the fuses- also check the fusible links under the hood by the battery on the driver's side.
also electrical current to the MAF vane.

^^^ lifting the vane with the key on is probably the easiest way to use the old pump to pump the tank dry into a gas can.

Here is a photo of the problem ..... Now fixed!
I got a new pump and sock (covered the warranty) and fixed the plug on the pump housing.
The pump was probably still good but replaced it anyway. The problem was that electrical connection.
                        It runs great again!!!
Thanks everyone, especially Movin, for steering me in the right direction!!
