  • Cooling fan not spinning properly, PLEASE HELP

    Hi boys and girls.

First of all, I found this forum by accident and boy am I glad I did...I was reading some stuff that you guys do here with your Festivas, you guys are crayzy

Now for my question that has been bugging me since I got my car 2 years ago. Itīs a Kia Pride 1999, has servo, no A\C .

My cooling fan isnīt spinning like it should, when the car gets over 100°C it should turn the fan on and cool down the car to 90°C but it doesnīt.

Some times it just kicks in for a few seconds, some times it works for 2-3min, and the last time it was working for over 15min (and cooled the car below normal temp).
So yesterday I changed the cooling fan switch and still the same, so now Iīm trying to see if there is something wrong with my wiring in the car.

I saw that your cars all have a cooling fan relay near your left headlight lamps, I donīt have that .

Does anybody know is I have that in some other place, or maybe my car doesnīt have that at all ??
I am all open to any suggestions

    Cheers.

    Thank you

    Hello father from Croatia,

Prides also have a cooling fan relay. Diagram C, right hand edge.
    Good luck.

Thank you very much for the whole Pride diagram, and for the answer...I have a connector that could fit the relay, but I donīt know if that is the right one...

Iīm gonna take a few picture and post them here so you can see...

And the main thing thats bothering me is why is the cooling fan turning on at all if I dont have a relay in my car ??

The only switch ever made to run the cooling fan was a large one that screwed into the radiator tank. If you do not have a large switch in your radiator you have a relay somewhere.

Good golly somebody is a wealth of data, awesome score ! Did they have those cars up there ?

Yeah...I dont have that near ma radiator... I have connector that looks like a relay would fit there and thats it .

I followed the wires that go all the way from the thermal switch, through injectors, through cooling fan, all the way to the cabin of the car,
and there is no relay or anything similar to a relay on that whole loom.
That whole loom goes to the computer of the car.

And I just realized that my car isnt the same as the car shown in that Pride Wiring Diagram from bravekozak.

I dont have a carburator, I have electric injection. And I dont have a bunch of those relays in the engine bay...As a matter of fact, i dont have any relay in my engine bay.

I think that there is a high possibility that my fan is controlled by the cars computer

All Festivas (carb and EFI) had a fan relay according to my Festiva wiring diagrams. The fan relay is normally closed so that the fan runs comtinuously if the relay fails.
I cannot imagine a cooling fan being grounded by the computer. Too much juice.
Check again. Pride diagram B-01C shows the same wire colors yellow/red stripe and black/yellow stripe.

A failing fan motor sometimes will not turn- if it runs at all, it likely is not bad, but still could be. I had one on the old 88 that I could start with a little push sometimes. Needed changing I guess. I eventually had it running manually off a fused switch I wired in, and I'd turn it on and off by watching the guage.

I'd also check or change the temp sending unit screwed on the radiator. Is the temp guage reading consistently?

Maybe a connection or ground has corroded or not making good contact.

The wires from the fan motor are bigger than anything but battery ,starter, or alternator wires. They should be easy to follow to the relay, probably well hidden in the left fender area.

Along the lines of harpons thoughts have you jumped power and ground to the fan motor ?

The lines arent hard to follow, my biggest problem is that I have isolate them after I take down the isolation that is already there. But Iīm gonna have to do that...

And yeah, you are probably right about the relay to be in the fender somewhere... Iīm also gonna try to take down the fender to see if there is something in there.

And by jumped power ? You mean if i tried to connect just the fan wires to car battery to see if its working ?? If yes, that YES, I have tried that and the fan is working normally

Some of these cars have up to three switches or sensors screwed into the coolant. It wouldn't hurt to make sure you replaced the right switch. Your pride may be wired like ours, if you unplug the right sensor the fan runs all the time. Look for corrosion in the connectors.

The fan switch may be a safety feature, like a motorcycle accellerator or air brakes on a a train? And, come to think of it, the accellorator on an outboard motor, called a dead man's throttle. You have to keep pressure on it for it to work. If you let go it stops. In the case of the fan you have to keep pressure on it to stop it, otherwise it runs.
