  • Alternator question

    Hi guys,
I am having some issues with the water pump/alt belt on my 88. It likes to break. I did notice some squeaking coming from the alternator when I put a new belt on. Could the bearings be worn? It doesn't look like the bracket is bent since the belt is lined up as it should be. Also, the alt pulley spins freely when turned by hand, and the car charges normally when the belt is intact. I don't really know what is causing this and I am getting frustrated. Any help is much appreciated. Also, it is an 88 LX. What is the alternator rated at? I saw new ones online rated at either 45 or 50 amps.

I had a buddy of mine his festy kept doing that and he had a big bur on the alternator pully it kept chewing the belt up. It's worth checking into.

check the other pulleys too. also make sure you have @1/4' deflection when belt is tightened [push down on it with your finger-it should move a little bit].

I just had the same problem. The alt was rebuilt and a new belt in March and just started to squeal recently when under load. Took it in to a battery shop and and they re tightened the belt and told me that a new belt needs re tightened after a week or so. Fixed the problem. I thought I was overworking it with my stereo.
