  • BP Water Pump

Ok so I have to replace the water pump on my festiva before I can start driving it again. It has a BP engine. I know the timing belt has to come off. There is no dust shield on the timing belt. Is there a mark on the crank to get it at TDC? Going be a new journey for me (never changed a water pump on dohc car). Any help would be great. Maybe theres a write up someone can point me to or explain this to me. I search and can only find water pump for the 1.3.

Instructions for that are all over the internet, like 91 Escort GT etc. There are certainly some here, but my searches couldn't bring it up. But in 200 or so B6/BP engines, have only had ONE water pump fail before 60K, and that was a race engine running 8200 rpm, so drop the power train straight down, do front crank seal, timing belt, belt idler, belt tension-er, water pump (please use embossed metal gaskets for pump and bypass, Mazda dealer or on-line), cam shaft seals, cam cover/valve cover seal, and distributor/cam angle sensor "O" ring. Plus the inevitable odd-ball items that crop up as you go.....

      Oh, yes, everything is marked.
And we also do rear main seal at this service, but that is not by the book, just experience.

Put it at tdc number 1 cylinder mark each pulley with a paint dot put a corresponding paint dot on timing belt teeth.Count teeth between marks on t belt mark new t belt the same.If you count and mark correctly and it Watson time before it will be in time when done. This is the most foolproof way to change a t belt I have found yeah the factory put marks but withack here etc. Sometimes it's tough to get it just right paint dots are foolproof

Ok thanks guys. Doesn't sound bad at all. There is no water pumping thru so Im banking on the water pump. The car sat for few years. I flushed the radiator and took out the t-stat. So last thing is water pump.
