  • Festiva alternator differences (electrical connections) by year?

I found five alternators in my ANC stock, all from Festy disassemblies years ago.

Note in the photos that there are two electrical connector configurations.

Which configuration is for which year(s)?

The 1 with the plug is for efi cars. The one with only a post is for the carby cars 88-89.

It appears they both have a plug.

One is a longer plug mounted on the side while the other plugs into the back 180° from the stud terminal.

Either that or I'm imagining it.

        I see it too.

From elimination, IIRC that the plug on the side of the alt is EFI, I'd say the other is the carb.

Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

          I think you are correct.

Four of them have the 2-position connection with terminals 90 degrees to one another AND, on the other side of the circular area in the housing, a single-position connector.

The probably-EFI one just has the side connect.

Both have the stud, which I guess is power-out.

I had O'Reilly in ANC test all five. Only the probably-EFI one passed. They had nothing connected to the single-position terminal, only to the two-position terminal.

So I brought them all back to SEA and will have O'Reilly or someone test them here.

Yeah, there are 2 plugs on the carburated cars. You gotta have them both hooked up. The main stud is the power out.

O'Reilly ANC's tester didn't have anything to plug into the single-conductor location. What does that connection do?

Almost all internal regulator alternators have three connections.... The large one is the charge output, one of the small ones is the "field" wire this requires 12v ign to activate charging. The third is the output to the charge light in the dash. If someone is testing the alternator without the large ,one of the two small connections and the ground..... I would not trust their findings.....

The wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual shows 3 wires from both '93-and-earlier and '94-and-later.
No difference in wiring between manual and automatic although connectors may, of course, differ.

That's the difference between the aspire(94-97) and the later festivas(90-93), not the difference between early festivas (88-89) and late festivas(90-93).

I know Kartracer once wired a "late" alternator to work in an "early" as he always referred to them.

I have both carby and EFI in the family stable, it is a PITA.

Provided "early" and "late" are electrically the same, "rewiring" might be an option using a built-it-yourself adapter cable, provided the connectors and pins are available. Does anybody have part numbers, or even just manufacturer names, for them? FWIW, the molex connectors used in the wiring system (e.g. taillights) are no longer available; I buy mine from a guy in Japan, and don't know where he gets them -- they're clearly not used parts and not brittle, so they're apparently recently made.

Question: Is the "late" alternator something that's still currently available new, i.e. was it used in other types of vehicles then or later?

I have used the alternators from 94 protege, and 91 929, as well as a few others..... I even had one from a mid 90s pathfinder a long time ago.... All with the round ended "later" plug...... Oh, all on either the 1.3 or the 1.6..... Both have the same physical bolt pattern and pin-out as long as the plugs are the rounded ones.
