93 festiva randomly dying..

HI guys my name is Will and I'm relatively new to the forum. I purchased a manual 93 festiva from a buddy of mine and just recently started having some issues while driving.

A lot of the time when I am cruising and push in the clutch and leave the shifter in gear (usually happens in third gear) I can hear the engine stumble and the car shake a bit before completely dying. It usually takes a few seconds but it almost always dies when the clutch is pushed in and it's left in gear in third.
Any ideas as to where I should start looking to fix this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a tachometer? What does it idle at for rpm?
If it sounds like its idling too low when hot raise your idle rpm.

I don't know if it's necessarily running hot.. but yeah I'll either be moving in neutral with my foot in the clutch but the shifter still in gear [3rd] or stopped with the same scenario and the car will shake a bit more than if it were out of gear completely and just die.. it doesn't sound too different but it does sound like it loses power relatively quickly..within a few seconds.

By hot i meant operating temperature, not overheating. When you let off the gas theres a button that makes the butterfly valve or whatever you call it take 3 or 4 seconds to fully close.
It sounds to me like your idle is too low. Has happened twice with my festiva. There is an idle adjustment screw and over time it can slowly back off and lower your idle. Or if you dont tighten it enough it happens fast
So when your engine is fully warm adjust that screw until your idle sounds nice and smooth but not too high. Easy enough to do by ear, you dont really need a tachometer.

The idle adjusting screw is impossible to mistake. It sticks out of the back left of the carb (facing the back of the car) and is white plastic. You can also spray carburettor cleaner into the carb and on the exterior linkages to clean it up so everything moves smoothly.

He has a 1993 so its fuel injected. Right?
Anyhow, open your hood and find the throttle cable. Pull on it so it opens and shuts the throttle and look for whats stopping it. Theres a funny looking button thing that slows down the last few mm of travel but there is a stop to prevent it from going back too far after that. A screw adjusts that stop. Its on the passenger side of the throttle body under where the throttle cable meets it.
It should be real easy to find. If you cant then send me a pm with your email adress and i might have time to send you a picture at the end of the day.
Oh, and the screw on efi festivas faces to the front of the car and is metal, not plastic. I believe its a phillips and 8mm? Cant remember

93 should be efi unless it's an overseas car or had a carby motor installed.

If you're in the USA it will be fuel injected on a 93.

The carb'd engine has a round air filtre, fuel injected has a square air filtre. I'm pretty sure they stopped putting carb's in them half way through '89. Anyway it's easy to tell by raising the hood and peeking at the engine. Sorry, I should have noted the year in the original post.
