    I see!

That being said, would there be any benefits from replacing the cat with a piece of pipe? The problem of fluid dynamics should be eliminated, since the pipe would be the same diameter from manifold to muffler.

Well, I don't have access to a lift or an impact wrench until wednesday, so I'm trying to rule things out in the meantime. Thought maybe it's a fuel delivery problem since it won't even rev up in neutral. Changed the fuel filter, no fix. I timed it by ear last time, so I'm going to go grab a timing light and see if it's maybe my ignition tomorrow.

Went to the shop today and took the car apart. I was getting about 30% flow out of my cat, but that wasn't the source of the problem. My timing belt was 3 notches off and my ignition was tuned for that. I fixed the belt, went out and bought a timing light, and hollowed out the cat. The car is faster than ever. I bet I can break into the mid 18s now.
