  • I'm givin in. I cannot get my drivers side tie rod off...

I'm gonna have to take it somewhere. I got the nut backed off but the tie rod itself will not budge. I got the passenger side off easy, musta been changed before or something. I have tried pb blastering it to death. Heating the tie rod up with a torch. Put a pipe wrench on the thing and it just will not budge. I quit. I usually don't give up on things but this one beat me.

Hit the side of the knuckle where the tie rod connects. Hit it 5-10 times with a ball peen hammer. Put the nut on loosely and tap it up and out.

If you slam on the out side of the ball joint where it connects it will pop out.

Or you could use a special tool auto zone can rent you.
Its like a wedge fork looking thing. It wedges between the tie rod and knuckle and is hammered in to split them apart.
          You put money down.
And when you return it you get all your money back.
Their tool rental program is great sometimes.

What I did for my aspire to unstick a tie rod end.
Was I put my jack on the end of the tie rod where the thread are.
And as I jacked up on the tie rod end.
the knuckle would rise up with it using the shock&spring pushing down on the knuckle in the opposing direction I was jacking the tie rod end.
And once I had it where I wanted it. I used a hammer to help shock them apart.
          Worked on both sides.

Just remember not to compress the strut and spring too much.
I could imagine if it broke loose with too much of a gap between the compressed spring and it's fully extended self.
It could build up enough speed/force to possibly break something... possibly.
          Running 40psi.....in my tires.

Buy this for your collection and never mutter profanities again.
Better hurry. You only have two and a half hours remaining.

I think of a pickle fork as a last resort, since it messes up the boot at least. Works though. I use the method previously described...

I wonder if he isn't battling the inner rod?

For outer tie rods here's the tool I use...

The quarter is there to give you a size reference.

I guess I didn't explain well. I have the tie rod off of the knuckle. I cannot get the tie rod itself to unscrew from the threaded part.

Have a care when using those, they work also, but I have had them mushroom the tie rod end where they tighten, and if you leave the nut on to avoid that you *might* bind it up with\booger the threads.

I use a 2-prong puller. Once it is tight I hammer on the tie rod end to break it loose. I think it's the shock under stress which breaks it free. I wouldnt' keep turning as I've found in similar curcumstances the part usually deforms before it breaks free.

I have a little propane torch. How long would I have to leave the flame on the tie rod? the jam nut is backed off.

If the outer is junk anyway heat it red hot and remove. Propane burns on the cool side as far as torches go, use MAPP or Acetylene if you can. Be careful...
