  • nasty sounding from front of engine.

Meant to say rattling sound coming from front of engine. I'm not positive where it's coming from exactly all the pullys seem fine. Engine runs ok but when i clutch out at a light it makes this noise. It tends to go away after the engine speeds up. I replaced the rear tranny mount already but I'll check it again tomorrow. I don't think it is the cause. I'm sad about it. I'll probably need a rebuild I'm at like 200k. I'm just curious if it's something common or what. I feel like its cam shaft but i change the oil often and what not. I did seafoam it before it's last oil change. Could it be connecting rod? Idk

Time to pull out a stethoscope. Calling Dr. Festiva. Come to the operating room immediately.

Does it do it when you are leaving your driveway/parking spot? Does it do it in reverse as well as forward? Does it do it when you rock the car (forward/reverse)? From what you wrote sounds like it only does it under load. How about steep hills where you have to gear down? You can simulate load by pulling away with the brake partly on.

It does it forward and reverse. It kind of resembles piston slap. As soon s as it gets over like 2k it seems to away. I replaced the timing belt a while back and i did my best to torque the crank bolt. I replaced the oil pan gasket only to find the front crank seal was bad. bbbI'm thinking collapsed lifter since it's hydro. Is there any way to diagnose that without tearing the rockers and stuff off?

Are you sure its not a heat shield?
A bad hydraulic lifter will be a well defined tapping, not a rattle.
How long did you leave the seafoam in? May have thrown a bearing if you left it in too long.

You should post a video of this noise on YouTube & link it to this thread.

A video of the sound would most likely get you an awnser or lead you close to it, this forum has alot of knowledgeable peeps N just saying a sound is heard in the front... we could make pages of guesses.

From what you posted ima guess a misaligned pulley or a pulley with a bad bearing. Hopefully you can get this figured out N get your festiva back in biz

I only left the seafoam in for like 5 minutes or so. I'll check the heat shield and get a video. How can a pully get misaligned? The crank pully looks goofy kinda. But I'm not sure if it's just crud on it or if it is wobbling

Pulley not properly torqued down can get misaligned.

Take the belt off, feel the inside of the pulley. If its kinda slick take a wire brush & brake clean & scrub it including the outer part of the pulley. Also inspect your belt. Misaligned pulley will show wear on the outer edges.

Idk if this is your problem but my guess from what you said.

Seafoaming a old motor is taking a risk, over the years of built up sludge, seafoam breaks it loose & can clog oil screens or engine passages regardless of what engine. I seafoamed my stiva awhile back & had sludge problems shortly after. Id change the oil & filter every 1,000 miles with cheap stuff until i thought it was good enough. Took a couple of cycles to run it through.

Bolts prolly worked loose and egged out the holes.
