  • Problem that i would like help with quickly

So i brought my car in to fix some burnt wires on the steering column for the wipers. I used a cheap fuse that didnt blow. Anyway, started taking everything apart to splice the harness and it looks like the majority of my wiring harness has been spliced at some point. One wire into 2, 2 wires into one... Burnt wires absolutly everywhere. Headlights, taillights, cig lighter, wipers... No insulation. Half the harness is melted togeather in one spot. I have to try to fix it so i can drive it home now so i dont have time to do research. Can someone tell me how long it takes to replace the whole wiring harness? Its a 1993 manual trans. I have to decide in the next 2 days probably if I'm gonna fix it or find another. And its gonna take me hours to try and get this driveable...
    Thanks

The dash will have to be removed. Then it's a walk in the park + you can clean the heater core, replace all of the bulbs in the cluster, radio and temperature/fan control + replace any deteriorated foam seals.

I know what has to be done, i have helped someone do it in a different vehicle before but it took like 20hrs. I just had my heater core out, thats why this happened. Just looking for a ballpark time figure for someone doing it the first time.

If you take pictures and label some major wire clusters, I would guess about 8 hours for the first time.
I have already done it about six times. I am down to about 2 hours.

8 hours isnt bad, but 2? I dont think i can remove and reinstall my dash that fast! That doest sound too bad though, ill have to decide how much work i want to put into an old rusty car now... And see how often complete wiring harnesses come up for sale.
So i re-wired my wiper motor and washer pump from the switch on the stalk back and rewired my brake lights. Now its just my horn doesnt work. Blows the fuse every time you hit the switch. Put a big fuse in and the relay makes noise but no horn sounding. I will have to figure out what i need to rewire there. Or maybe its the relay? Havn't found a wiring diagram yet. Here are just 2 photos of what i had to start with. The fusebox is quite bad as well...

            Hi Ryan,
It only took me a couple of hours to pull the entire harness out of a Festiva at Pick N Pull. I removed the dash in that time frame as well as well as the driver's side fender.

You mean there are separate harnesses and its not just one big one? Thats cool. Ill have to read through my manual about that tonight, i thought it was all one harness from headlights to taillights. It sounds like its pretty easy to change from what you guys are saying-thanks for the replies to that. I just have to decide how much time i want to put into my rust bucket now.... Its hard to stop when you have already put months and months of your life into a car you like... :/
