  • AC help please!

    93 l with dealer air. Has never worked since I bought it 5 yrs ago.

    Was completely depressurize when I opened it up two months ago.

    Had been converted to to R134a? Had the R134a fittings but no R134a warning sticker.

    Going to replace the compressor, clutch and drier. Will fill with Enviro-safe.

    My main question is which O rings do I replace? What do I replace then with (size, type, part#)? Where do I get them?

    What is the capacity of a dealer system?

    This is a start. Sure I will have other questions. This is the first time I've done AC work.

    Good idea to replace all of the old O-rings. Everywhere there is a connection fitting. The hardest ones to get at are for the thermostatic expansion valve inside the evaporator core.

      Within the last 3 year I have removed and replaced the entire AC system in 3 Festivas and all are still working great. In January, I removed the complete AC system from Rosie (my current project car) and will be replacing it withing the next couple of months with a rebuilt compressor, new expansion valve and new accumulator dryer. Only trouble is all these cars had factory installed systems.

      A few things to watch out for: The fittings on the accumulator/dryers come in varying sizes (The first one I ordered had the wrong size fitting) so make sure it is correct when your order it. You should definitely remove the evaporator box from inside the car and clean all the trash out and replace the expansion valve (or orifice tube if the dealer systems had that)...it's not that difficult to do.
      Be very careful when disconnecting and connecting the fittings. Make sure you have the correct size wrenches on both sides of the connections.
      As for o rings, I bought an assortment box at Harbor Freight tools, bought a FMC kit and also bough individual ones at a local independent auto parts store. Save all the old o rings and match them with new ones to make sure you have the correct size.
      I also bought a gallon of denatured alcohol and filled all the hoses, evaporator and condenser with it, then blew it out with air pressure when I got ready to reconnect and refill the system. This will remove all the old oil from the system.
      You can get rebuilt compressors with and without oil already in them. Make sure that you follow the directions that come with the compressor.
      Make sure you use oil that is compatible with the refrigerant you will be using and be sure to use oil with leak detecting dye. Many of the places that sell compressors also have specs for oil and refrigerant capacities for your specific vehicle.
