  • Recent B8 swap - encountered issues last night

I ran into an issue on my way home yesterday. All of a sudden the car started spitting and sputtering. I managed to get the car off the road and it died as soon as I parked it. It would start back up, like in the video below, but if I didn't give it any throttle it would die right away. If I did, it would backfire and spit. Now it will not start at all, but it does crank.

    Heres the video:

I picked up some new plugs and wires today and will be installing them later. I'll post if they fix the problem, but I figured I'd post this to see if anyone has any other ideas in case the new hardware does not fix the issue. I did find a loose ground, which I tightened, but that did not help.

Check intake tube for cracks/leaks. Any loss of signal to the VAF will present those symptoms

I had something similar and it turned out to be the hose to my brake booster came off. Not while driving though. Check hoses that connect directly to the manifold to see if they have come off or are cracked. And check the components they go to as well, like the brake booster and stuff for leaks.

Don't forget to also check any rubber vacuum caps, to see if they are missing, or split, or dryrotted.

I think I'm not getting fuel. I checked the plugs after cranking for about 10 seconds and they were bone dry. I checked the vacuum hoses and tightened down a few for good measure.

The new wires and plugs did not make a difference.

Check the intake tube! If the VAF doesn't see signal, the fuel pump will not run, period. You can also jump the fuel pump test port and force it to run for testing.

Found the issue. One of the wires going to the distributor plug pulled put. I had to splice in the connector from my other Festiva. Starts and runs now.

More issues guys. When I hit the throttle and let go, it idles back down and shudders, almost shuts off, then idles back to normal. I've checked the vacuum lines again but found no cracks or leaks. Happens everytime
