As a one-stop-shopping post, I decided to consolidate some info on stock shifter bushings, in case you just want to do it the simple and cheap way. The main benefit comes from replacing the two right under the shifter. The other easy change is the two in the u-joint at the tranny end. You could stop there, or continue by replacing the two in the non-servicable joint, which is a little more involved. Charlie/Advancedynamix has a great writeup on permanent bushing replacement.
STOCK SHIFTER BUSHINGS
Kia dealer: P/N KKY01-46062
Mazda dealer: P/N - B001-46-062
Ford dealer: Escort ZX2 shifter rod bushings (?)
In fact, I think any shifter bushings from late 80s - early 90s Festiva/Aspire/323/Tracer/Capri/Miata/Protege will work. I have taken shifters from most of these cars, and they are all pretty much the same, except the Capri's was shorter on top; no doubt the Miata too
