  • Previous Owner Carb Issues - Unhooked hoses

Finding a few issues with my new purchase.

    1. Top right: This box is disconnected for some reason. Haven't really figured out why the person did this, what does it go to? Should I hook it back up?
    2. Bottom Left: PCV hose is disconnected and is rerouted through the front of the grille. Car seems to have a bit of blow-by (171k and probably wasn't that taken care of), should I still hook this back up? It was probably gumming up the filter but it venting through the front of my car looks ridiculous.
    3. Cold start is painful. Lots of cranking and when it starts it revs to the MOON. If I feather the throttle it goes back to normal. Granted it is cold outside but I have no idea how to work a carb (I was born in 89 and carbs were way before my time).

If you guys would give me some tips/tricks that would be great. This car doesn't have to pass emissions so that's not a problem, runability is what I'm going for for now.

Suggest you go this route. See posts #11 and 26 for interesting pics.

    1. Looks like the Pulse Air System, sending air into the exhaust to increase burning. I'd get rid of the whole thing. More EPA stuff a car doesn't need if it is tuned right.
    2. Suggest replacing the hose with a small filter. You will have to clean it every so often, but not a big deal. Or if you go with another carb, you can hook it back up as intended. But I wouldn't.

Yeah I don't really wanna go the Weber route as I don't know how long I actually intend to keep this engine; I wanna go B6D eventually. I'll get rid of the Pulse Air system; I want to clean this engine up as much as possible (with little to no money).

OK. There should be a little cheapo filter (crankcase breather?) in the front of the air filter housing, for that hose you were talking about. Just re-connect it then. Have to replace or clean the little filter every so often.

You should be able to pick up an '80s Escort carb pretty cheap, if you reconsider. Essentially a Weber.

Oh, it goes into the actual filter housing? I looked it up, just looks like a block of foam?

Yeah it's just a crank case breather, supposed to posh any vapors into the intake to burn them as fuel.

If you take off that long hose that's hose-clamped onto the original hose, and rotate the original hose clockwise about 90 degrees, it will arrive at the pipe it connects to, coming out of the air filter housing.

I replaced that little foam filtre on the inside of the air cleaner housing with a piece of household foam. The air from the hose passes through the foam and then through the air filtre so the foam must must be there to keep rocks from under the valve cover from clogging the air filtre, or keeping rocks from the air intake from getting under the valve cover. Mazda thinks of everything.

I just went to any auto parts store and bought an air breather filter. A pair of scissors will make it fit perfectly. Then just connect the hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner.

Ahha. I knew the hose went there but I just couldn't figure out like, the reasoning why the PO did that. It must of kept oiling the air filter. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

The breather filter is where the air comes in to the valve cover.
It exits out the pcv valve. The filter shouldn't oil up much unless the passages in your valve cover are all plugged up or the PCV valve is plugged. Shake the PCV valve to ensure the ball can move up and down. If so, then remove your valve cover and check for crud blockage under the baffle cover. Take pictures.

This is what I did with my reed valve assembly after I changed to non-feedback carbs.
                      My carbed engine runs great.

If the PCV valve does not rattle it is clogged and can be cleaned with solvent, eg WD-40. The PCV valve should be replaced when the spring is weak and won't hold it closed. I imagine the spring could be tested with a pressure/vacuum guage but to the best of my knowledge garages just replace it and charge you. You'd have to know the air pressure/vacuum at which the valve should open.

I once had an 88 and took all that paraphernalia on the firewall behind off of it- and then plugged the carb intakes they ran to with some caps from the parts store- it ran better after that-

That big silver breather to the side of the round filter cover? I recall that was riveted to the housing so I plugged those two entrances on the right with bicycle handlebar end caps- anything

You can also get a foam breather to hang off that one tube instead of running it back into the exhaust- it's probably got it's share of unburned gunk in the system already. you can cut that tube down and it makes it look like a little male thing hangin there!

I'd start spraying the crap outta the carb - periodically for a long time and running carb cleaner in the tank- I did a rebuild with a little kit- of an original Asian carb- didn't know much about what I was doing and had new parts left over I didn't want to mess with- but the old carbs run pretty steadily if theres not something really wrong with it- not a power thing- just reliable.

A can of cheap enamel would go a long way making the top of that assembly and some of those plastic parts look nice again- I like to use Dollar general Chrome

                          good luck with it

The little red Festy below is my old 88 =- I got it at 175K and ran it to 275 with very little issues.
