I have a 94 aspire. Long story short I broke my cv axle. But I think the car is stuck in first. Is this a common problem when the cv axle breaks? And if so anyway to fix it or do I have to rebuild my transmission?

I've only replaced worn cv axles. Have not had one wear to the point of breaking. Assume it broke at one of the flexible joints? Can't imagine how that would cause an internal transmission problem.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.

Ok so I bought the car for 400$ just as a gas saver and when I bought the car I knew that the cv axles were bad and popping. No big deal I'll replace them I also bought inner and outter tie rod ends. Well it started raining really bad where I'm at in socal a few weeks ago, and I had to drive through some big ass rivers.well right after I made a hard left and the car started popping really bad. And when I got to where I was going (fedex) the car was fine when I went to leave I backed up and made a right and the car started popping really bad and then it made a loud pop and sounded like some thing was dragging. So I pushed the clutch in and coasted into a parking spot (I thought I blew the motor and the sound was a rod ) well the cv popped and was eating the whole inside wheel bearing. But when I get in the car and press the clutch in the car starts up fine and idles fine when I let off the clutch it makes the grinding noise( because the cv axle is spinning) but my stick is showing I'm in neutral. ( as I can wiggle the stick or gear selector around) but the car has to be in gear for the cv to be turning sooo any suggestions?

Its probably not stuck in gear. If you can go through the gears with the clutch pushed in, just replace the axle and you will be fine. Did you verify that the cv axle is making the noise when you let the clutch out or are you assuming it is what is making the noise. Bad bearings in the transmission or the throwout bearing can make grinding noises. The Festiva Store

Yeah no name kid I'm a dumb ass. When I got the car towed home they put the car on the street backwards so I pushed the car and obviously if I can push it it isn't in gear. And yes I'm 1000 % positive it's the cv axle I looked under the car as my friend let out the clutch and watched the cv axle spin like crazy. So I ordered both cv axles yesterday off egay for 100$ I also have brand new inner and outter tie rods as well so this should be fun

I think I can tell you why the broken axle was spinning - it's because even with the clutch pressed or the t-axle out of gear there is some residual drag that an unattached axle half has no resistance to. In other words, once the axles are replaced there won't be enough of that to cause turning.
With the clutch engaged there is an entire shaft with parts rotating inside the gear case, and some of that can be transferred to the disengaged shaft just by fluid flow in the gear case. But it has no torque.
The input shaft to the transaxle will spin when the engine is out of gear, and in a way it's a bit like a blender inside of there
PS: DAVID, I have forty bucks set aside for you. What are you doing this weekend?Last edited by Greywolf; 02-06-2017, 11:06 PM.Most people don't drive what they want at all, and never will

Since you are replacing both CV axles now is the time to warn about removing both at the same time as the innards of the transmission will collapse creating all kinds of extra work. Just replace one at a time to avoid that problem as Brave recommends.Last edited by WmWatt; 02-07-2017, 08:31 AM.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.
